I would put off the other broodie girls by constantly removing them from the nest. Blondie was the one who had to wait until her 4th time of becoming broodie. My husband had to build a larger coop before I could add any new birds. She was over joyed when she became a Mommy.

It's interesting how some hens are very maternal and others aren't. Probably a combination of hormones and personality. Just like people.

In this photo Blondie was teaching the chicks to fly down off the perch. Princess the RIW followed her Mom's example and flew right down, Whatnot, the Barred Rock did not so Blondie promptly returned to the perch and shoved her off.:)

It is a function of genetics. Broody hens from egg laying breeds were culled, so the trait was bred out of most egg laying breeds. Very few hens from breeds that were bred for egg laying have the ability to hatch eggs or mother their chicks.

My Welsummer roo attacked me again this morning. I picked him up by the neck, gave him a swing over my head and threw him back to the ground. For a moment there I wanted to keep on swinging and maybe should have. Earlier this year he attacked my leg and put a bruise nearly all the way around my calf.

The damage he did the last time he attacked me.

The rogue roo.

After I swung/threw him he kept FAR away from me. It must have scared him. I feel a little bad about it...on the other hand I cannot worry about being attacked every time I'm around the chickens.

Yeeeouch!!! You need to hear Beekissed (on the fermented feed forum) tell about her adventure with Bud! Hilarious!!

You can't feel bad but understand why you do. We are human. I am trying to stay alert with Angel Eyes, but I am sure he is going to get me again. People just don't realize the excitement we have with our chickens!!

Lisa :)

Wonderful idea, thanks Teri. I sure want to buy 1 for my "upcoming" boy. We expect Charlie in March 2014 and I sure will read him this book for many night from 2014-2017. And if he loves the title, I will have him try the real deal at the ranch.
...I meant to ask yesterday if this was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek funny????

A hectic week so far. Lost 4 young chicks Wed night. This afternoon a neighbor dog got in and killed 8 more (5 mos running loose). And I was up all night last night chatting with my wife when the hurricane got there. She drove home on scooter last night at 10:30pm dead tired with wind and rain. Ca'nt wait for next week... got to be better.
Glad your wife is alright. Sorry you lost your chicks. :(

What a day I had today. I was up very late watching a movie last night and woke up before 7am this morning. Less than 6 hours of sleep. :/

It was too windy to ride today soooo.......

I started cleaning and then headed out to do a couple errands. I went to Calloway's for their big sale and got some stuff for the yard. After a quick trip to the grocery store I came home and started my yard work. I planted what I bought and trimmed up the stuff the freeze got. Then I mowed the yard and caught the clippings this time to put in the garden to compost over the winter. The yard looked great when I was finished. It is all covered with leaves again now. It usually takes me an hour to mow the lawn (I don't have a self propelled mower just now) and this time it took much longer. Then I changed out my edging on one bed. It had rocks, now it had antique bricks that I found in the yard last year when we moved in. After all that I transplanted some house plants. I spent about 4 hours in the yard. I came in got back to cleaning and made a taco pizza for supper.

I am tired! I still have cleaning to finish up, but I am almost done. Not wanting to get up off the couch right now.

Better get back to the cleaning now.
