Question for all the cooks :old I'm making meatloaf & mashed potatoes for my 87 yr. old mother for Christmas Day. I have a 5 hour drive & go on Christmas Eve day, should I cook it before I go or can I mix the meatloaf & freeze it raw to cook when I get there? :idunno

They take about 1.5 hours to cook, well thawed.

When do want to eat....right away?? You can bake it before you leave, wrap in foil, then in a towel, THEN put in a small ice chests keep warm. Just do your ketchup/tomato sauce topping when you gat there and put it under the broiler....just till bubbly, watch it carefully.

I, too, was going to suggest you cook it, wrap it in a heavy towel or blanket and put it in an ice chest.

Lisa :)

He/she wasn't leaving that chicken-I was within 4' of it, it would drag my hen getting further away from me. It came back the next day to finish her & I saw it fly off, it didn't have a red tail

This happened 2 years ago but in the last couple of weeks we've had one flying through our back horse pen & one of my younger AG stags disappeared, there were a few feathers in the pen. I imagine Taste (the horse) ran him off.

That was one brazen little hawk. Juvenile Red Tailed hawks don't have a red (really chestnut) tail--theirs is banded like your picture. I still think yours was a juvenile Red Tailed hawk. The tail is too short to be a Coopers hawk. He must have been really desperate to stay with the kill with you so close.

It is really hard to identify hawks in the wild unless you get a photo of them. They are all brown blurs you see for a few seconds. Juvenile plumage differs greatly from adult. There are different color phases and morphs, so one normal Red Tailed hawk might be almost black, another the more common brown and another pure white or something in between. There are Red Tailed hawks that have white patches almost like a pinto horse. Plus there is a huge difference in size between the males and the females, and there is a difference in size between the sizes of the same sexes.

Red Tailed hawks are a fairly big bird. They are not particularly agile or fast and mostly hunt squirrels and rabbits. I don't see why they wouldn't try chickens. A Coopers is the bird I fear the most. They are ambush predators and very, very fast. They hunt in the understory. They are sprinters, and tire quickly. Plus they are really bold. They (and Sharp Shinneds) are the kind of bird who will pluck a (clipped) pet parrot off the shoulder of their owner.

Ok y'all 2 quick questions. 5 eggs 4 hatched and mama has left the nest. #4 hatched fully about 3 hours ago. What about 5? Should I leave it, if so how long? Shes been out of the nest with the other chicks pretty much all day.
Second; Is she looking okay? Comb and waddles are a bit pale compared to the other girls. I do understand she been wholeheartedly sitting for 23 days now. Just asking for opinions, all are welcome and appreciated!

She's gonna look a little puny since she has barely been eating and drinking for three weeks now. You should be feeding momma and the babies chick feed, which has a higher protein level than regular layer feed. You can also supplement momma hen (and the babies) with things like cat food, scrambled/boiled eggs, sunflower seeds, alfalfa, calf manna, game bird feed to help get her back in shape.

Just place the feed and water next to her. This way the chicks don't go too far but stay under her. Then push the 5th egg under her. You may have another chick by tomorrow. If 2 more days and it still don't hatch, then it's time to take it away.

So, babies may have gotten a bite or two of the scrambled egg I just made her :) She loved it! Haven't seen her eat like that since she went broody. Thanks!

Just don't refreeze the meat. That would not be good.
