Brookshire11, I keep hearing about the elderberry syrup. Where do you get it and do I need to get a certain brand?

Thanks!

Lisa :)
I use elderberry capsules - Nature's Way is the brand I use. I get mine at Market Street. Any health type store should carry it too. GNC in my area doesn't though. Better grocery stores with a healthy section should have it too. The liquid is kind of bitter and doesn't taste all that great.

I take 3 times the bottle directions when I feel I am coming down with something. When my son got sick (he isn't as good at taking it as he should be) I took twice the dose to keep the bug at bay then I drop down to the recommended dose for a few days just to be extra sure.

It's bitter?
Man, the kind I buy is SOOOOO sweet.
My daughter asks for her "berries" everyday lol
Have you ever tried a Master Tonic or firecider?
I made a batch of the and...WHEW!...it's not fun to take but it's nipped a sore throat in the bud more than once!

Good afternoon, everyone!

Part of my New Year's resolution was to try and make something new at least once a week. So far, I've not done much other than making chai lattes and ramen noodles.

The plan for this weekend is to make some hummus, some spinach dip, pita chips, mini beef empanadas, chicken salad and croissants. I want loads of tasty finger foods that can be eaten throughout the cooking process. I can play a couple movies in the living room, encourage my family to enjoy some tasty morsels and maybe have a cocktail or two (I'm thinking of making a strawberry & blackberry mojito).

Are there any interesting dishes I could try out later? I have this weekend planned out, but I'm scrambling to find other delicious things to make. I get super overwhelmed when I have loads of different recipes that I want to try, haha!
I have tons of yummy recipes. Are you looking for just finger foods? I subscribe to a few blogs that have really good things on them. Pennies & Pancakes is great for low cost good food and I am Baker is awesome for all things sweet. The Pioneer Woman is my all time favourite though. I love her dishes. I like to make them more healthy by using less 'butter' (allergic to that) and using olive oil instead if that will work in the recipe. For finger foods look into the pillsbury site. Example

I love to cook and bake. It's a good thing I don't make all these recipes, especially the sweets. I'd be huge!!

My 17 year old also has a smell, but it's more of an Axe cloud. We remark about it, only because the noxious fumes of body spray/body wash/deodorant/shampoo all competing are sometimes unbearable. He won't leave the house without a shower - my husband and I are convinced our water will be much less when he leaves for college this year.

My 14 year old girl, on the other hand, I have to MAKE take a shower. Mine really are "odd birds" I guess.
Oh the Axe cloud! A friend of mine was over when my son got ready to head out and told me I should tell my son the commercials don't really work. ;) lol!

I find it bitter. My kids didn't like it either. I can drink it though. I don't like grape juice either, so maybe it is just me.
I don't remember the brand I bought - got it at Mike's Health Collection on White and hwy 75. It was made by some company that makes elderberry wine too. Had horses on the label.

Did the chicks come yet?

Oooh! I didn't know there was a health store there...awesome

No word on the chicks yet.....post office hasn't called and I haven't been able to call again yet....
I'm just anxious at my desk, refreshing the tracking page like 10 times an hour.

Market Street is also a great place to get health stuff and their prices are a bit better. They are on Eldorado and Lake Forest. They have really good meat and produce too.

Went there hungry once...

..bad idea. Lol!

I get in Pinterest when I need inspiration for meal planning :)
Maybe if you get bored you could try a different type of cooking? Ex baking bread or making a pizza all from scratch? Homemade ravioli or gnocchi?
I went to culinary school for awhile and my favorite thing was how much variety there was in the different styles of cooking.
I like Pinterest but, honestly, there is just so much on there that I get distracted, haha! I've made bread, pizza and pasta from scratch before, so it's not really new, but I definitely have thought about making some more. The problem is that I have to do it all by hand (I don't have an electric mixer, a stand mixer, or a pasta roller. I don't even have a rolling pin, actually. I just use a wooden dowel, haha! I consider myself lucky enough to have the patience to make bread and pizza dough (and the ability to just know when my yeast is happy, hehe!).

I'll look some more, though. For all the arguments I have to not make pasta, bread and pizza from scratch, I love to do it. It's just time consuming and difficult when you don't have all the tools on hand, like a large plat surface to roll out dough. Mom and Dad made a mistake when they got our kitchen counter made with tile and grout rather than a solid surface. I don't have a cutting board big enough :(

Finger foods are for this weekend because I want to make sure there is plenty for everyone to choose from. Also, I'll be working all week on graphic design stuff for work, so I need something that I can really munch on while relaxing on Saturday. Making a big meal is great, but finger foods are better for family movie/game/puzzle/story night.

Next week, assuming I am feeling better, I'll be making a full meal. A couple weeks ago, I made a huge, 8 lb pot of creamy cajun chicken penne pasta and the whole family loved it (I made up the entire recipe, too, so it was kinda flattering). I even shared with my neighbors and my sister (+ her boyfriend).

I'll definitely look at some of the blogs that you mentioned. I try not to use brands like Pillsbury in my cooking, though, just because they make me sick. However, I'm sure some of the recipes can be modified to fit the foods I'm able to make/eat.

I'd hate to imagine what it'd be like if I made all the delicious recipes I came across, haha! One new recipe a week seems like enough to keep me satisfied, haha!
