Texas

Good Evening Texas! I was wondering if there are any other places that stock and sell adult Roosters in the San Antonio/Austin corridor. I've been to New Braunfels Feed and Supply, various Tractor Supply Stores, and Callahan's in Austin by the Airport. None of them had a SLW Rooster. Are there any other stores like Callahans or NB Feed in the area? Wimberley/Boerne/Dripping Springs, etc?

I almost bought a nice one from a lady on Craigslist...she has several and breeds them. I can find the info for you...

I know chickens should roost, but is it weird mine don't? I've seen them get up there occasionally, but every night when I check in them they are all under the roost on the coop floor. Since I got them older, at 2-4 years, is it a learned behavior? They lay well, and seem happy. The roost isn't round, and it isn't too high, low. Should I do something to encourage roosting, or is it okay?

Bnjrob, thank you so much for recommending the Brinsea brooder. I love it! The chicks are so quiet, I keep lifting it up to see if they are all alive. They just seem so much happier and less stressed than when they don't have something warm and dark to go hide under. I've always hated heat lamps, but hadn't appreciated how much more natural that little brooder is.

How do you know when to raise it? When they stop crowding under? I think I'm going to get the 50 chick size for my next lot of chicks.

Are you set on a SLW? I would give you one of mine if you wanted. Got two buff orphingtons, a Cochin, and a cuckoo maran. And some frizzles. Lol.

Look up diamond T on craigslist farm and ranch. I bought my SLW from him.

I've been looking on Craig's list and I found a nice coop. :)  I think it is priced too high so I am trying to get her to come down.

I'm a single mom too and I don't make much money either. I have to be very careful how I spend, especially since I did the roof and got new tires already this year.  I have some major things that need to get done around my house this year too.  I need a money tree. :)

I found this horrible thing too.  What were they thinking?!

:) That coop would go perfect in Austin's Funky Chicken Coop Tour. The year I went on the tour people had coops made out of all kinds of things. There was an old mailbox used as a nesting box. Really imaginative things.

For hens, four eggs. And I'm the one who feels productive.

And my girls, not roosting. But the poop is under the roost in the morning, so do they get up there later? I just took the picture, and they put themselves to bed about an hour ago.

Edited to add: and notice poor penny by the door, while the other 3 are together.

Just moved my group from the grow out pen to the main pen. Did it at night with DS help, made him feel good to "help mom"

, he held the flashlight. I use the deep litter method now and dang, that stuff rocks. Last year I did not and when I did the same transfer my shoes would had poop all over them (even though I cleaned it every weekend), this time, one little spot and "walked" that off by the time I reached the house. They are going to be MAD tomorrow since I wont let them out to range for the next 2-3 days while they get used to it.
