Hello from Tyler and welcome to the form. What part of east Texas are you from ?

Yeah!! You need to change your name now to HasHens. :)

Want to see my yard work? Look here.
I'm still technically henless since they are babies. They are supposed to be pullets. In fact, that is all Horaney's sells is pullets. You have to special request roos.

What a difference in your yard! It's really nice now!!

She said "have chicks" so the new nick should be "WillHaveSeveral Hens"

I'm hoping to have ALL hens! I would like to get a roo next year when I get some more babies. I want to raise these and get used to dealing with chickens again.

We had chicks when I was a kid too. I don't remember much about it except for slaughter day. Daddy would wring their neck and them darn headless bodies would chase me all around the yard.

Welcome to the board! I'm also from East Texas. Live out in the country with Longview being the closest "big" city, lol

Here's some pics of my new babies. They range from 4 days to about a week old. I have one Barred Rock that has a lot of wing feathers. I think she is the oldest one.

Here they are line dancing under my Premier heat plate.

I have to say I love my Premier heating plate. They seem to really like it. Not much peeping going on while they are under it. It's just a big change from what they are used to. I got them at a local feed store, Horaney's in Longview. They have a brooder room that is heated, so they don't use heat lamps. Best part is, they let you pick/catch your own if you want. They also know what kind they are getting every week, unlike some places I've checked.

I got 15 chicks. Three each of RIR, Australorp, Barred Rock, Americaunas (Easter Eggers) and Golden Comets. I really wanted some Orps and Wyandottes, but they wouldn't have any of those until the end of March. I figured that would too much of an age difference, so I got the BR's and Comets instead.

So cute. :) I found the thread on the heating plate. I read through the first few pages and then skipped to the end. Saw your post there. Love your watermelon box. I think I will go that route. It will keep the cats out and the mess in. :)

Where did you get your heating plate from? Direct from Premier? I looked on amazon and didn't find it. My search brought up things like the George Foerman grill. lol!

Side note: headless chickens really do run around? My mom always told me I run around like a chicken with my head cut off when I was young. I still use the phrase today.

The weather this year is driving me crazy! We did a lot of work yesterday so we could move our chicks outside, they were getting to be just to much inside. We put 46 of the 51 out in a pen with a Rubbermaid container (upside down w/a cut-out) and they were having a blast running around, stretching their wings. We made sure they were inside their shelter at bedtime and they all did great last night. Now its 45* out, suppose to get colder tomorrow w/rain and ice possible tonight and tomorrow morning. We put a heat lamp out for them but it looks like we are going to have to bring them back in tonight for at least until Thursday...

I love my watermelon box! I wish now I had went ahead and got two. I got it free from Wal-Mart. Just ask someone in produce if they have any empty. They didn't when I asked, but they took my name/number and called me when they had one. I folded it up and put it in the front of my truck. It doesn't have a full bottom, so I folded up a tarp to put under it.

I ordered it from Premier. I wanted the large one, but it was out of stock until March. I love it so far. Much safer than a heating lamp.

Yes they do!!! I don't care where I stood, or what I stood behind, they would always run in my direction. Everyone got a big laugh at it but me. Makes me wonder why I like chickens? LOL

how cute are those baby chicks!! I am in Van Zandt Co north of Canton.
We have some of the same childhood memories! Lol and we had the meanest one legged rooster around! I am getting some RIR chicks from a lady I get my eggs from and I am also wanting barred rock and buff orps. Hens only, im going to pass on roosters for now :)

I bought a 20 chick brooder from Brinsea. I LOVE it. You can get it on Amazon.
