Texas

I wasn't going to say anything because I know people FF in plastic buckets made into strainer inside other plastic buckets and seem to do fine but I just wanted to give you a heads up...

I only know from a baking stand point with sourdough starter (which from what little I've read about FF, seems to be about the same concept) that you should never put starter in a plastic container. When doing sourdough starter I always had to use glass or ceramic containers, I used a plastic container once, the starter went bad. I've read about people doing FF and not knowing what they did wrong but it going bad on them and I wonder if it might be the container they use?

Just wanted to give you a heads up, if you notice a funny smell or the FF seems 'off', don't give up on it and maybe try a glass container. I know Hobby Lobby sell oversized Mason Jars (look online for a 40% of coupon), I think I've seen gallon size Mason Jars at Target too. You could poke holes in the top for ventilation...only if the pitchers don't work!
The fermented feed for meat birds thread has had posts from folks who used glass containers which were closed too much and had exploded. he FF should smell like sourdough

You're right Ms Jellybean. As the fermentation process if acidic (lactic acid) it might react with some plastics. Food grade buckets may be ok don't know. But I'm going with glass. It's less porrous than plastic and sterilizes better. I once had a pitcher for OJ, couldn't figure out why after a couple of days the OJ tasted funny. It was the pitcher. Went to glass...problem solved. I think if you use a plasice bottle that already had juice in it that would be ok.

That's why I was thinking holes in the lid, I'm sure there's other ways too. I think I've read if you use a regular Mason jar you can use just the ring and material so it can still breath. Again, just my knowledge from sourdough and it was very minimal.

On a side note, if you bake and have never used sourdough starter you owe it to yourself to try! You can start the starter from scratch or cheat and order it online (I ordered from King Arthur Flour). Its amazing in breads/pizza crust/cinnamon rolls. You can play around with it to where it just at flavor and no so much sourness...I haven't baked much lately, now I feel the need to start back up!

I see y'all all talking about chicken shows is there a website that shows where and when they have these?

There probably is a website. Jajeanpierre had posted some shows she was thinking about attending and that is how I knew about Fancy Feathers. Since I knew the area and the timing worked out for me I got to go thanks to hubby granny sitting.

I spoke to zootopia (Dawn) today. She told me Melissa Rose passed away. Thought some of you that have been around awhile would want to know.

I think my girls were ready to go up tonight, because usually they wait till it's almost pitch dark to go up. Tonight at about 4:00pm the 4 birds that I have the hardest time putting up, were the first in. No prodding. The other 5, which are in a separate coop, gave me a little trouble, but not as much as usual.

Mine will stay out usually until the sun is almost all the way down. It was about 8:30 last night. They are out right now having a ball. And there is a beautiful double rainbow. My youngest is also outside with a friend playing in the puddles. Alas, teenagers don't play in puddles, so they are inside still.

Here is what I submitted for the company newsletter .. next week Double Feature In June 2013, Hung Nguyen went to Vietnam to meet his girl friend. Together they went on a long tour from South to Central Vietnam. Their final destination was Nha-Trang - her home town, where they hosted a small engagement party. In Christmas, Hung skipped Thermon party to return to Nha –Trang and marry Minh-Trang Thi Nguyen on Dec 28, 2013. Along with the guests was Hung’s unborn son at that time. Now, on March 14, 2014, at 2:45am (CT) little Charlie Cuong Nguyen arrived, weighing 7:01 lbs. His first word was “Happy Birthday Daddy”. Charlie chose to come out a week early so he can celebrate birthday with his daddy each and every year. This is a perfect case of “on time delivery”! Hung Nguyen is our Corporate Quality Manager at Thermon-San Marcos. The Nguyens are awaiting the approval of Minh-Trang’s Immigration application. Hung’s plan is to bring the mom and the son to Texas this Fall, in time for the next Thermon Christmas party.
So happy for you! Children are a true blessing and I pray that your wife and son can arrive here with you quickly. Happy birthday to you and please let your wife know we wish her all the best.
