Texas

14 of them are Silver Laced Wyandottes, 1 is what I can only imagine is a white leghorn that the Hatchery threw in as a packing peanut, and there are 3 French Guineas in there somewhere. Thank you for the compliments.

Packing peanut.... now that's funny, sad but funny!

Okay, so I did it. I moved them from the brooder in the garage to the coop.

When they first got in there they stayed huddled together like the boogey monster was going to jump out at any minute.

I took the advice of one of the members on here and purchased the 3 gallon metal hanging feeder from TSC. The top was open, so I also bought a large funnel to serve as a top and also keep the birds from sitting up there and pooping in the feed. I hung it with some barbless fence wire.

Here is a shot of the PVC\Chicken nipple auto-watering system. There is a black hose that goes out to the right that you can barely see. It connects to a 65 gallon rainwater barrel. I started filling the barrel with water and found a pin hole about halfway up. Not sure if I should try to fix it or return it and try another one. I'm thinking return, but danggit Sam's Club is like 28 miles away!
I concerned about the chickens figuring out how to use the chicken nipples. I put them in the coop around 5pm and still have not seen one bird try the waterer.

Yes....this is me checking on them every 30 minutes or so. First night without a night light and outside on their own!!! I'm kinda a nervous wreck, LOL!
Congratulations on the big move. Every 30 minutes

I love it!

Okay thanks. I now have a new item for my to do list: check chickens coop at night for creepy crawly things.
The Elector PS is for spraying the coop? I wonder if lavender would be a preventative? A Chicken keeper's work is never done. Whew
white vinegar is supposed to be good and so is vodka. You can make natural cleaners/coop sprays out of them. A dust bath with wood ash is good at keeping them away too.

That is really nice!

Yes it is. Atleast it is a pullet and not a Roo, so I will still get an egg. It will be a white egg, but an egg none the less.
A white egg will set off the other colours nicely. Or stick out like a sore thumb. Either way, like you said, it is an egg. :)

Still thinking about mites. I was wondering if a product that uses cedar oil to kill and repel would be safe for chickens. I do not use wood shavings, but I seem to recall one type not being good for chickens. Is it cedar or pine? Or some other type?

Cedar is not good due to the fumes.

I thought it was one of the two, pine or cedar. I use hay so I couldn't remember. If it is the fumes I wonder why there are so many coops made of cedar?
My girl's love to take dust baths under the Bull Cedar trees where the soil is loose and full of cedar droppings.
The product I was thinking of is used for insect control including fleas and mites. It is called Cedarcide.

Dear Texas Forum,
I want to apologize to all of you for making you so Itchy.

I am ashamed to say that with this winter being so cold and so many health issues i was not at all vigilant about checking on the ladies for issues.

They got clean bedding fresh food and water but spent most of the time in the run and packed so much of the dirt I am sure now that they were not able to bathe properly. ( I thought they only used the dust bath to cool down like pigs and mud.)

I will be way more vigilant in the future and will make sure they have proper poultry bath houses from now on.

I want you all to know that if not for this Texas forum and the natural chicken one I would still be wondering instead of acting!

So as I am sorry for making you scratch

I am VERY GRATEFUL for the results.

Thanks so much
Jodi
