Looking up ideas for coops...

I hadn't thought about turning furniture into a coop, but these people did.

Found this on craig's list. Wonder if it would convert. Wonder what would happen to it in the rain...

Isn't this one cute?
That't super cool! I have a friend who made one out of an old dresser but I thought it was kind of tacky looking. This one is pretty sweet though!

The log cabin coop is cute! You may need to add some windows for air flow during the summer. I don't think it's big enough for 7 chickens, not much floor space with 3 nests in there. Also, depending on which way the chickens are roosting, looks like they might be able to poop in the nests. You could put exterior nests on it, but if you do that with the windows, you would be better off getting one already done that way. Another thing, landscape timbers tend to warp really bad. Those are cut short, so you may not have to worry about it.

Just how worried do I need to be about day time predators for full size chickens? I have neighbours that let theirs out all day and they have similar fences (or shorter) to mine and the hens are all over their yards.

If I don't need to worry about making them a big run for the day time I can build my big coop only. It is the big run that was going to prevent me from getting chickens since I couldn't get all the wire. If I get the chickens as planned I can still get the big chicks and only need to buy a little more to build the coop.

Could I still use the plastic fencing to make a run for the big hens? The coop will be secured with hardware cloth.

Ms Jellybean, the coop link didn't work.  :(

On the west side of our coop, we have a shutter for our big window.  On windy/cold/rainy days we can shut it.  For the south side we put up a shutter during the winter.  Our coop has plenty of ventilation.

The Cherry Pie Cookie Cups look delicious!!

Lisa :)

Lisa if I try to open a craigslist ad right from the email it won't open, I have to go to the BYC post & click on the ad then it opens right up :idunno :caf

Hawks are always a possibility, I've had 2 taken by hawks in 4 years but I'm not going to stop letting them freerange. We do have some woods at the back of our place that they go into alot & are safer there :)

Can a red shouldered hawk take a full grown chicken? That is what I have by me.
