What kind of snake was it? I can't tell from my cell phone. No more chicks for it!! Yay

Gotta love a good snake dog. We had to put our best snake dog to sleep last week. Hopefully the others will pick up the pace and take over on snake watch.

My cats kill and eat mice and snakes that come by. It usually follows a pattern here, first mice, then rats, then snakes. So far, we haven't seen coons, possum, or skunks here. We see them about a mile up dead after being hit by a car though. We also hear couotes at night, but they haven't been seen in the neighborhood in over 15 years. I think the high stray dog and feral cat population keeps them away.

I kept thinking it had to be a snake. No sign of any distress or loose feathers. There's a hole under the coop from where I moved it I dismissed as a bug hole... Guess he was squeezing through it.

It's a rat snake David. She was about six foot long ( I'm 5'5" ) I went dashing out with the .22 because I saw a coyote. He saw me and dashed off, I handed the gun to my friend Mindy ( she's living with us until the military gives her her schooling grant )and started a head count. I heard a peep peep and went to look for the hiding chick. Found it in the jaws of the snake. Mindy threw me the .22 and I shot it as it was spitting out the chick. Ripped its head off and Blue spent the next two hours destroying and eating the body.

If he'd have been closer when I saw it I would've just suck him on it but he's mostly deaf and I couldn't get my voice at the right octave in time before the snake started trying to run away.

I thought it was a rat snake. They're good to have around as long as they stay out of the coop! me and your dog got something in common!! Both of us half deaf!! Comes in handy on occasion.

Haha!!! Yeah. He can only here deep tones and I wish I could mimic the pitches my voice changed as I tried to get his attention. He ran over when he heard the shot though.

I ordered some French guinnes on Friday to help with bugs but I hear they will handle snakes and mice also. I'm looking forward to the pest control!

I wanted some Guinness but was told they are really dumb, very loud, and never shut up. So I didn't get any. Is this a stereotype or is it true?

They'll surround and attack a snake if they see it. But they're to big to get into the baby coop... I only had the smaller door open. So they just screamed and raised the alarm.
