... I think there is actually protein in bird poo. I read an article in a farm magazine once that chicken poo had so much protein they mixed it with shredded newspaper and fed it to cattle, and they grew on it!
I believe I read that chickens only process about 50% of what they consume. So chicken poo still has many of the nutrients and protein remaining.

I have the same problem with my own dogs sometimes eating chicken poo, but not always. We're trying to slim them down based on vet recommendation so our dogs might actually be feeling a bit hungry.

You all really probably don't want to know what commercial cattle are fed. Chicken poop is probably cleaner than most beef cattle are fed in the feed lots.

I have been attacked and bitten by stray dogs that I don't mess around with them. If a dog shows no aggression I either leave it alone or try to save it. But if it shows a any aggression at all, it's dead. I won't let my kids be bitten like I was. Nor will I allow the dang strays to kill and eat my chickens, fight my dogs, or chase my outside cats. I love my animals and do my best to protect them, even if it means me out there with a stick to beat a dog off, I will. And I don't think much of people who don't care enough about their animals to restrain/confine them for their own safety.

Anyway, sorry. I rank animal abuse/neglect pretty high since studies show that people start off abusing animals and then move up to women and children. Big pet peeve of mine.

I would not want to eat cows that were fed chicken poo and newspaper!

. And no dog should be free roaming, especially an aggressive one. I'd be making an annomous phone call to report aggressive dogs on the loose. Let the landlord deal with the cops. Otherwise, if they got in my yard I'd be shooting said dogs.
Have you ever been to a cattle feedlot? YUCK!! Protein is protein, really. Some cheaper dog foods use chopped up chicken feathers as a source of protein. I wouldn't want to eat chicken or duck poo, for sure. I don't think it is hurting the dog. Apparently eating poo, whether it's from chickens, ducks, horses or other dogs, is a very common trait among dogs. They even make stuff you can put in your dog's food to make his poo taste so bad he won't eat it. I can't give that to all my ducks, though!

As for my landlord's dogs, they are not aggressive to me or my daughter, just territorial with other dogs. I don't want my dogs out anyway, because of the highway.

As I said before, AMEN!!

I totally agree. My wife and I were discussing this very subject last night. I told her if any stray dog or neighbor dog is attacking me, you or my birds, dogs, cats, etc., I would shoot to kill. I always have my 9 on me, so that would not be a problem. I believe if people want to own dogs, or any other animal, they should be required to keep said animal on their own property. If they don't, I consider it a wild animal, and act appropriately.

Yeah, finding out how chickens, cows, and pigs are raised by the industrial farms has given me a sick stomach. Don't have enough land to raise my own cattle though, lol.

I live next to a highway as well, so I understand about wanting to keep your dogs from being road kill. I am glad that the dogs aren't people aggressive at least. I take it the dogs haven't tried to get your ducks either, which is a good thing as well.

With 2 boys that egg each other on to do really stupid things that they know NOT to do, my 9 is in a lock box hidden close at hand. Until I get my conceled carry license I won't carry it, even on my property because it would show and someone would probably call about a maniac with a gun. I live in a residential neighborhood 2 blocks from a school, so I have to be careful. I wear a lot of tank tops and jeans, which don't conceal anything. During the day the lockbox is moved near the front door, with the combo mostly punched in. At night the gun comes out and is tucked under my pillow, loaded but not chambered. So there have been a few times I have had to grab something laying around to chase off a dog. I seriously need a closer, better hiding place for my 9, so it's ready when I need it because seconds count.

It's kind of amazing since the phone is chain link, but they come up to the fence and look at the ducks, pee on the fence and go on their way. They have never tried to dig under or anything. If they came into my backyard and killed my ducks, THEN I would shoot them!

You do know it is totally legal, and your right, to open-carry on your own property. If someone calls, the cops would ask if you are on your property, and maybe come out to make sure, but would not be able to do anything to make you disarm on your own property. I understand being safe around the boys, but firearm education is the best thing for them. Not trying to tell you what to do, just my opinion.

Lol. That's really great. Glad they aren't threatening your flock. Wish my neighborhood strays were like that. Oh well, those dogs are scared of me now at least. A couple got int my yard and I whacked them with my stick and chased them out. Now when they walk by they look for me first. I'f I am visible they just watch my flock but don't try to jump the fence. If I am not visible they get brave though.
