Hello I will be hatching some Silver Laced Wyandottes and Lavender Orpringtons around July 19th. There's only one problem, I can't have any Roosters!!! I only have homes for 1-2 SLW roosters. If you are interested just remember that I don't know how many roosters there are until they are 4-6 weeks old, but I just want to have homes set up. If you would be willing to drive here and pick them up then they would be free but if I have to meet you halfway it'll be $15-20 depending on distance. Please pm me if interested and we can talk more.

good luck o.o I find culling so hard to do

i have dug ditches, poured concrete, built up and tore down houses and barns, i have shovel dug foundations and septic tanks, i have replaced broken water pipes in the dead of winter heck i even helped to hot shoe a horse once, but i have to say killing anything whether it be for meat or for mercy is some of the hardest work i have ever done in this life and i hope it never becomes easy. Because i have lost alot of things in my life but i don't want to lose my conscience.

I can't. I have to let my dad or boyfriend do it. I am going to learn how to pluck and process, though. I'm used to messing with whold dead animals because I feed my dog raw meat. So I know that I can do it. I just may tear up because it'll have a name.

As I'm brand new to chickens, I've yet to need to cull but I will with good conscience if/when the need arises. Not that it'll be easy (I almost cried when I had to kill a stray cat that had it's back broken by a german shepard lol) but I'm comforted by the fact that it will be in the most humane way, much better than battery chickens for mass production.

Yes, I too believe that getting a good short life free ranging is more humane than a battery chickens life. I also think it makes for a better tasting bird.

Congrats!   It looks like all of the hard work paid off!

Our 10 year anniversary is this December and I'm wanting to do a small celebration and have formal photos (our photos from our wedding were taken by a friend and very disappointing...) and that is almost EXACTLY the dress/style look I'm wanting!  Do you mind sharing where you found her dress?

We found it at Melange Bridal in Austin. It was a complete make over. It originally had a long waist with a slant at the bottom.

Starfire...How is your chick with the injured eye doing?
I'm still treating my little maran with antibiotics. Her's was not an injury like I thought but crusty from the crud she has. I think her eyes itch. She managed to take a chunk out of her eyelid with her foot so she has a tiny piece missing when she closes her eye.

She is fine. I think she is partially blind in the damaged eye. She can't see as well on that side, but there may be some vision, just not a lot. You can't see anything wrong with her unless you pick her up and look real close, you will see some scarring. But nothing to noticeable. She has a good long life ahead of her.

Good for her. That's great news. She can see to eat and get around and have a normal life.

Yup, we are very happy at the recovery she made.

I have a dumb question, if your chicken has itchy eyes, could you put visine on it? I think visine is just saline to moisten the eye. It shouldn't bother her or cause any problems. But get a second opinion from someone who knows chickens better just to be safe.

Hmmm....hadn't thought of that. It might help. She keeps rubbing her face on her shoulder so she gets junk on her feathers. She's not sneezong or wheezing so I let her out of her quarantine cage for a while yesterday. Probably not a good idea if she does have mycoplasma. But I felt so bad for her. She wanted out so much and she hasn't seen the sun or been able to bathe for a week. She stayed mostly to herself and got some fresh air and sunshine and got to share some of the watermelon. I put her back in the cage for the night so she wouldn't be in close contact at roosting time.

I see more cuckoo marans in the future. IDK if I just got lucky or it's the breed but they are the sweetest birds. so calm and friendly not fearful from day one. I'll see what kind of layer she is (assuming she gets well). Pretty sure the other one is a roo. Sure was hoping they were both hens....luck of the pick.
