So do you leave the hay in when summer comes? I tried taking mine out and it was hell!

First year we've ever used hay so I've never had the pleasure. I figured I would rake it out if I had to, but since we have portable houses, I was hoping that the mud in our pasture would dry up by summer so that I could move them and not have to worry about it. It doesn't sound fun to try to get it out after the chickens have tramped it down.

Anyone here have any experience de-spurring a rooster? My 6 year old, Mr. Feathers, has spurs that are about 6 inches long and he's having a LOT of trouble walking. I need to get these shortened or removed.

I use dog nail clippers. Have to be careful not to cut the quick - they bleed badly. Some styptic powder or even flour works to help stop the bleeding.

I don't know about dog nail clippers - his spurs are as big as my pinky finger, which is much to big for those clippers.

You can get large dog nippers. They are sometimes hard to find though if most folks have little foo-foo dogs in your area. It took me a while to find the ones we needed for our big spurred boys so I used the biggest ones I could find and just cut small angled cuts to get the spur worn down. to just above the quick.
