Texas

It's been many years since I've been to a Roundup. My folks used to take us every year when I was a kid, until my father's health got bad. I was 10. I'm 36 now and haven't been since but I remember always being excited and fascinated. Need to catch one one day

Yea, I get to get 2 more chickens. My Neighborhood voted to allow chickens. I already was allowed to have 3 hens. They are my therapy pets. It will be interesting to see other neighbor's chickens and setups.

Never been to a rattlesnake round up. When you turn in snakes are they dead?
No, they are very much alive and that, for me, is the problem. Being a strong believer in the only good snake is a dead snake. I know all about rodent control and that stuff...but...

At the Sweetwater Roundup they have all sorts of pits and pens filled with rattlesnakes. People actual "round them up" to harvest the venom for the making of anti-venom as well as butcher them. You can buy all sorts of rattlesnake dishes to eat (YUK). They say it taste just like chicken but I think I will stick with the real thing.

@Ren2014

It's going to be a wonderful day in the neighborhood today. Hope all are enjoying the Texas weather.

Ren2014, I do not remember the name or type of rabbits. I know they are bred to look like cottontails. They are a small breed - 10#'s or less. Got them last year at Canton trade days. They do not have the long floppy ears that are disease prone either.

I am not going to complain about the dirt on Redhill. It is an iron ore red clay. The only thing to say about it is, "if you'll stick to it when it's dry, it'll stick to you when it's wet". Lol. I have spent 2 years mending garden & flower bed soil. Was unable to get compost & mulch delivered this year by the dump truck. But that is ok, too... I will have my own seasoned compost pile next year.

Oh, and lastly....I am sure we can work out some sort of barter on the flower bed work!!! Haha

Have a great day. Post us lurkers some daily pics when you can. Anything.....

Here's one from me.

Enjoy today everyone.
SOOOO CUTE!

On the bright side, I have been running some hatches and my roosters are doing their jobs. I have hatched a group of LF Chocolate Orpingtons. I suspect there is a mottled gene the way some of the chicks are turning out, which is pretty cool. Some seem to have the standard FL genes, but it might be the general coloration of the chicks too. I managed to hatch Black Copper Marans, and blue Americaunas. I love the blue feathering, slate blue legs, and sky blue eggs of my Blue Americanas. I have some hens maturing, with one hen laying. So, the young hens are POL, with one girl producing and with good fertility.

So, I am pretty happy with my hatch rates.
YAY, I'm watching for the chocolate for sale signs

At the roundup in Sweetwater this year they were paying 10 dollars a pound for the rattlesnakes. If I did not have such an aversion to snakes in general and Rattlesnakes in particular I would do what some of those folks do. One group actually turned in almost a thousand pounds of rattlesnakes.
Folks used to come out to our place when my husband was a kid to round them up. We still have about a million here on 113 acres. If you get over that aversion let me know

Backyard chickens are becoming so popular that more neighborhoods need to consider this.
