Texas

My new 4-week-olds came from my McMurray order this morning! Sadly, one Easter Egger was DOA, and the other was a little lethargic, but she's perked up and eating and drinking now. She keeps trying to get under the slightly bigger RIR's wing, which makes me laugh. The RIR and BO are vigorous and healthy. I think they will all be beautiful birds! I put a bathmat-covered heating pad, turned to "low", in the pen with them and they've all been very happy.

I have a pen ready for them out next to my permanent coop and run, for the look-but-don't-touch stage. How long would you keep them isolated in their pen in the garage?

Interestingly enough, Claborn Farms, north of Waco, filled the order for McMurray. I have talked to McMurray and emailed Joe from Claborn Farms and both have been very responsive about the DOA chick. They will send a replacement that is the same age as these chicks next week. But now I'm thinking I need to order another to keep little Replacement from being lonely or cold in shipping. Is that what they mean by chicken math?

I am trying to find the discussion on tree rat bait for traps. I think it was Rooster who had posted what worked well.
Anyway, I haven't found it yet, so let me ask. What do you bait a trap for squirrels with?
Spring has sprung in my area. Everything is green and I have my garden started. I love my keyhole garden and so does my granddaughter.

Grand daughter looks happy. She will remember back when the keyhole garden was huge:D

Would enjoy seeing more pics of garden.

Sounds like chicken math to me.

That is only the beginnings of chicken math. It is an insidious illness for which the only treatment is more chickens. Just two in a big old box will mean that they will be shaken and jostled about so much. I think you might want to increase the number you get to assure they are not shaken too much in shipment. (Yes, I am an enabler)

Ha, thanks a lot! I'm afraid the other little EE, despite all my efforts at keeping her warm and getting her to eat and drink, isn't going to make it, either. I'm sad, she is so pretty! Claborn Farms has been excellent in all my communications with them. Looks like I have 2 more coming next week - but only two! I don't want to exceed the space-per-chicken criteria in my new coop, and I don't think Mr. Coopmom will be amenable to building another so soon. Dang it.

Coop mom - you shouldn't be too far from Ideal either if you need other chicks. Have had great experience with them. And then you don't have to have them shipped....
Nah, I'm way up in the Texas Panhandle, so that would be at least one day down and one day back by car. Actually, Privett is the closest to me (in Portales, NM) but they don't do juvenile birds, only just-hatched chicks. At least that's what they told me on the phone...

Lake Whitney.
Finished my coop last week. Picked up 6 RIR yesterday from my grandson. Excited to get started.

congrats on the new coop and RIR's

Hello & a good day to all. Garden almost in. Planting & reworking flower beds next.

Have not seen too much activity on thread. Hope all is well. Looking forward to sharing with fellow Texans.
WOW, nice big garden with good looking dirt.
Pretty birds.

Hahaha...no cushions. Would just catch poop. Chickens have run of place most of the time. My main flock is black breasted red old english bantams. They free range. Thank you for saying they are nice. I just try to keep them happy and healthy.

Including all the new babies.

$5 each for anyone close.
awwwhhh, what breed of rabbit?

I shouldn't have gone into our local Tractor Supply today. The bantam bin was overflowing with cuteness and they had a bunch of barred rocks and black sex links.
Too bad I don't have enough room for 6 more chicks. Plus the wife would probably kill me....

LOL, I don't go in this time of year.

Sorry to hear the sad news. I'm really surprised that they would even ship one or two birds. When I had a DOA from Ideal Poultry they wouldn't ship a loner or two so they just refunded me. Good luck with the new ones.

Working on flower beds.

When you get done there, you are most welcome to come work on mine:) Can't wait to see how your garden and flowers grow.

@Ren2014

It's going to be a wonderful day in the neighborhood today. Hope all are enjoying the Texas weather.

Ren2014, I do not remember the name or type of rabbits. I know they are bred to look like cottontails. They are a small breed - 10#'s or less. Got them last year at Canton trade days. They do not have the long floppy ears that are disease prone either.

I am not going to complain about the dirt on Redhill. It is an iron ore red clay. The only thing to say about it is, "if you'll stick to it when it's dry, it'll stick to you when it's wet". Lol. I have spent 2 years mending garden & flower bed soil. Was unable to get compost & mulch delivered this year by the dump truck. But that is ok, too... I will have my own seasoned compost pile next year.

Oh, and lastly....I am sure we can work out some sort of barter on the flower bed work!!! Haha

Have a great day. Post us lurkers some daily pics when you can. Anything.....

Here's one from me.

Enjoy today everyone.
