Confused on east/west sunrise/sunset.
I know the earth rotates a d tilts. But sun rises in one spot-shouldnt it set opposite (or close to) of where it rises. Seems off and not sure how to explain. If I face rising sun, I thought it should set to my back. It doesn't. Facing rising sun, sun sets to my right . I'm confused

Old soldiers lose the ability to smile. Nothing personal. It is trained into us and we reflect on the tasks we were asked to perform. Should I ever upload a headshot to BYC do not expect to see a smile on my face either. I lose too much sleep time reflecting on those days. Sorry if I am wrong @007Sean but you do suffer it seems from gulf war Army face syndrome.
So you see the '1,000 yard stare', huh?

So, I used to teach astronomy in college. Here's a little primer for ya: https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/solar-analemma.html

And so I went here:

Visuals are best for this stuff.

Ok, so the sun DOESNT set opposite of where it rises?
Yes and no. Sorry if this further confused you. Think of the pictures and the reference to a pole in the ground to have a shadow . If you were the pole and you stuck your arms out like a scarecrow (facing south) and left hands fingers are pointing directly at the sun then you keep your arms straight inline with each other so that your right hands fingers point at the shadow of the left hands finger tips on the ground.

If you walk the left hand backwards in time down to the eastern horizon where the sun arose from and kept your arms straight across then you could have your right hands fingers point at a spot in the western horizon that theoretically would be the sun's setting spot for that day. However it's not going to happen precisely that way do to the earth's wabble AND it's tilt of axis spin.

Do you remember spinning a top growing up and how it starts to wabble..... Now can you start to *see* where I'm trying to walk your mind to for viewing this concept in a big picture way?

So made it back from the fruit store. They had no lemons but we did get a 10 pound bag of oranges, 10 large limes a couple of fully ripened pineapples and two zucchini for $10.50 we are still set on bananas here at the house. We have the makings for a good fruit smoothie just not for my lemonade idea. I probably should have just bought more limes and made limeade. I still have koolade I can work around that issue with my own bitter lemons just not on the scale I had visualized. My heart was set on lemonade though also DW just reported back the bitter lemon tree is done so I can't have that either. So oranges and limes are my only option. I should have grabbed a watermelon too but the fridge is kind of full atm once it gets cut into.

Gonna try in a.m.

Gonna try in a.m.
FYI. If you have 5 pieces of wood, brick -what-have-you.... I'd set them all together now in the yard.
1) where you stand
2 & 3) for marking eastern horizon spot(s)
4 & 5) for marking western horizon spot(s)

If you do it now you might be able to at least get the horizon markers approximated for tomorrow. 2&4 for sunrise -- then 3&5 for sunset so you can see the "wabble" easier.

So I was just out back working the Mallinois in the yard with the frisbee. My neighbors seem to be ignoring Covid restrictions for the holidays, but some 5 year old girl screamed "that was great!" watching him jump after them. He can really hit moving targets never want to be on the wrong side of that dog. He is very sweet, loyal and trainable.
