Texas

Good morning,
right now it’s 17* and according to the weather channel it’s “Breezy” 18 mph winds.
granted nothing like last nights Breeze!
‘These are the only times that I regret open air coops! Granted not too many days like this! Anyone on here have a source for clear plastic tarp that lasts more than one season?
Right now I am using the cheaper blue tarp, and hate the fact that it blocks the light. I have a pretty large coop, so I assume I may have to special order it.
I have used the clear stuff from Joann fabrics, but with out the necessary rivets I have to staple it, and that doesn’t seem to last past a few days with our winds.

I moved to Tool, TX. a couple years ago from Reno, NV. In Reno I had RIR, Barred Rocks and Leghorns. Very prolific layers and handled the cold winters well. I'd like to start another flock this next spring and was wondering if the same breeds will be alright for the hot humid summers down here. If not, what are some good heat hardy birds that are also good layers?

Welcome and Good Morning!
I do stay away from the feather feet but that is because of gumbo mud everywhere (lots of clay). I've had all three of those breeds without issues. I don't think you will have any issues.

I also have an open air coop.
I went on Amazon and got a rivet tool. It came with 1000 rivets. I did alot of reading before I chose this one. There were cheaper ones, mine was $38.00, but you had to have solid surface and a cutter for h

ole and a hammer to set grommet. This one, you just find the spot and squeeze. just got it a month ago, so far I'm loving it. I riveted clear cheaper plastic for now, I found burlap Christmas tree skirts for $1 at dollar store, cut em in half, riveted and put on nest boxes, I also found a heavy duty clear shower curtain cheap and used that. Grommeted a towel to hang in shop( I was testing it out)
I realize, this is temporary.

Thanks, I really like the temperament of those birds so I’m hoping I can stay with them. It’s been about 10 yrs or so since I had leghorns, are there newer, more prolific layers that have taken their place, or are they still the good ol standard they always were?

Good morning! I don't have any of those breeds, but I'm sure they'd be fine with those large combs. I have WTB, light brahma, OE, welsummer, blrw, favaucana, English Orpingtons, out of all of those three English Orpingtons have the roughest time with the heat, but still manage. Surprisingly, my pea comb breeds do very well too. My welsummer and OE do the best.

I also used 48" bungee cords to secure areas I couldn't staple or screw. Very few birds fluffed or acting cold.
