I so want to get one of those automatic doors for the coop. Either that or I can train the kids to open it every morning. Yeah, right!

I live about 20 miles North of San Antonio in Spring Branch/Bulverde. We are trying to have a get-together for us chicken folk in the area. There never seems to be enough of us around that you can talk to in real life. Thank goodness I've got a friend that lives right up the street from me that has birds, too. I'd probably go nuts not being able to call someone to tell them about what my chickens did that day!

Thought I would start with 4 chickens so I have 8 between 2 and 4 weeks old (!) Live in South Austin close to the river and hope to make the Chickestock meet up this coming Saturday.

Well, I found a new home for the rooster, so I'm in the market for two new hens. If any of y'all are breeders in North Texas, I'd love to know what breeds you have available for chicks/pol pullets. If anyone wants to split a hatchery order, I'm fine with that, as well.

I have a Brower 817G, it is a round aluminum model and was only used a couple times back when it was new and has been in storage for 25+ years.
I got it out and cleaned it up and it still works but I cant seem to get it to stablize at the correct temp. I will adjust it and it will read 88 then I will increase it a half turn and check later and it will be 120 so I turn it down and so on and so on, I am getting so frustrated. I think the thermometer wasnt working right after it went real high because there was mercury stuck at the top that wasnt there before so I got a new thermometer a digital one this time but still cant get it right. My eggs are only going to be good for 2 or 3 more days so I think Im just out of luck. I really wanted to do this myself. I am disabled and can't drive so I am stuck out here on the West side of Odessa and don't know anyone anymore that could help me. I know I should have checked the incubator before I got the eggs but I felt sure it would all be ok since it has been stored well and still looks so good. My fault for not checking first.

Sorry its taken me so long to reply my internet has been down a while If you haven't resolved the problem I would order a new wafer thermostat they are cheap and they go bad. I grew up with one of those old round bators they are great. You could replace the parts that wear out on those and hand them down for generations I don't think they are ever really worn out or trash worthy.

I thought I'd added myself to this thread already, but I couldn't find it, so I'll try again! I live in Panola County. That's in East Texas near Tyler/Longview areas. I currently have a flock of bantams, various breeds, that I love way too much, lol. I'm glad to see how Texas strong we are on here on BYC!

Chicken math sure does add up! Had over 1000 growing up that I helped my uncle with. He lost most of his stock to Katrina... I had moved back to my home town by then and managed to save my favorite four. Four led to forty three years later and I have well over 50 at this point...

"Gotta replace that hen.." So you hatch/buy nine or ten to replace her. Bahaha.

So yes, be careful... In chicken math add one means add ten!

I started with a dozen or so a year ago and I'm up to 200+++, funny thing about chicken eggs if you put them in an incubator they make more chickens!
