Newbie from Farmersville here. I saw where there's 266 pages to this thread, so I read #1 and #266. I'll read everything in between a little later. Just wanted to say hi.

Greetings from Schulenburg, Texas, located just off I10 almost exactly halfway between San Antonio and Houston. It sure is hot here. I am native Texan, and after living in North Dakota for 30 years, we came back to Texas in November 2004. We have 7 hens, 1 rooster, 1 longhorn mamma to be, 2 Watusi cows with each a bull calf, 1 llama, 2 Pygmy goats, 3 Dwarf Nigerian dairy goats, 2 horses, 4 donkeys, 2 dogs, and 5 parrots. They keep us busy! I miss the cold weather. But, I have to admit, I do not miss the blizzards. I have a lot of exploring to do in this site, so many places I have not checked out yet....

That must have been quite the move!

Sure you didn't bring any flood waters with you? I know we could use some.

Hot hot hot .. I guess it has to break sometime .. around October ..

We'll probably have an overly wet cold winter and all be complaining because it's too cold and there is no sunshine..

Believe it or not, this is the time to plant broccoli. But shade it!

I will be planting broccoli, tomatoes, Oriental cabbage, garlic, spinach, oriental radishes (the big ones), new potatoes, and maybe a few other things. I haven't grown carrots in years but I might plant a few of those too. Most things really do better in the fall than in the spring, like carrots. And cabbages are impossible in the spring here because it just gets too hot too fast so they never head up.

Don't plant really long season things like pumpkins or corn that need warm weather when they mature but almost everything else is fair game and broccoli in particular is fantastic as a fall veggie here. More than once, I've gone out and harvested frost kissed broccoli at Christmastime. (we get our average first frost in mid December)

Anything i plant right now would be instant deer food....

though I am sure they would appreciate it!
