That possum clawed one of my old girls! Help⁉️

Pain meds are dosed according to weight. You need to get an estimate at least.
What kind of chicken is she?
Full size or bantam?
Huge or small?
Fat or skinny?
If you don’t have any way to weigh her, lift her up then open your pantry and lift up things until you think you’ve got a similar comparison.
Or do you have those work out hand weights? 2 lbs? 5 lbs etc. ?

Tonight’s goals:

-trim feathers.
-Maybe medicate for pain.

-Hydration is key.
Hydrate her repeatedly while all this stuff is going on by drops to the beak. For brevity, something I’m not good at, I’m calling this “offer water”.

-Offer water.

-Flush the wound clean.
I know this part is hard.
The sink method is fastest and once it’s done it’s done and over with. The sprayer or faucet flow makes it so you don’t have to touch inside the wound. Use plenty of soap.
Rinse gently but well.
Rinse all her feathers on her underneath.

-Dry her. Kind of squeeze her feathers, because she’ll be as wet as a string mop at this point, either with lots of towels or a blow dryer.
***do not blow dry the wound***just pat dry with a clean towel or soft clean T-shirt.

-Offer water.

-Treat the wound with triple antibiotic ointment, and/or vetericyn spray gel (to keep the entire wound moist and block out further contamination).

-Offer water.

Then put her to bed for the night in the crate, in a warm, dark room (with her companion).

She needs rest.

Tomorrow morning:

-Offer water

- try to get them both to eat some scrambled eggs, canned tuna, yogurt *no yogurt though if you decide on antibiotics
Or, regular feed moistened with plenty of warm water (like an oatmeal consistency).
If she hears her companions talking about food, and making eating sounds, it may stimulate her to eat.

-Offer water.

-Reapply vetericyn spray gel liberally.

-Offer water.

Return her to the crate inside the house in the warmest room. (Like a bathroom)

-offer water right before you leave if you’re going to Work or school.

-Check in with us at some point when you come home or have questions.
