Most Adult birds have names here. BUT the Blue Partridge Brahama and Gold Partridge brahma, they are DH's deal so I am NOT getting attached because these are his "money breeders" and culling will be necessary so I want nothing to do with it.

I may have say anyways because they are so gorgeous I couldn't imagine having to pluck one

even if I havent named the darn things! I am 5'2" yes that's short but even so those roo's stand almost to hip. I am starting to give them some "shoves" as they keep trying to steal from my arms when I carry stuff in and out! We moved out two of these roos into our layer pen, even though the hens are all LF these guys are 5x bigger, could these roos break hocks or hurt my hens? I thought it would be neat to sell some eggs with them in there and its a great place for extra backup roos, but now I question myself the bigger they get.

If someone would have told me I would get so attached to chickens I would have laughed them silly.

but now I am having a hard time getting over that hump to processing.... some good words of encouragement are needed for when its time!! and that be in a month!

I have trouble with it too. I can and will process my birds, but I found a butcher fairly close to me so I take them away, say good bye, and pick them up in (mostly) anonymous plastic bags. I shed less tears that way.

GOOD MORNING to all !!! Having some coffee then off to work with my son we are installing a heating system in a new construction home today..... Hoping we can get it done today and not have to finish it tomorrow. Needs to be done by Monday when the dry-wallers arrive.

Sounds like a project! We'll be working on our porch, putting up car siding and wrapping beams today. Hopefully it will get warm enough so it isn't too miserable.

I just got back from a cruise, thank goodness bc I am ready for the chickens again!! (not the 12+ inches of snow waiting for us..)

In Belize though, there were chickens everywhere!! I remember this one momma hen with around 18 1 or 2 day old chicks, just wandering around! I couldn't get a photo though. :/
They mainly had Game bantams, but I once saw a Mille fleur Cochin, so stinking cute!!

Okay I need some help and since it takes forever to get help on the emergency thread, i will ask here. On NYD I hatched an Araucana chick, it has fallen ill, very ill, not eating, wobbly at firat now just lays there face is pale. I took it and put her under a heat lamp in my mud room, now i have a CCL girl who was in the same area, but different pen doing the same thing, she hatched in September. I moved her in the mud room in a separate cage. Theey both have been getting rooster booster for a couple days ( except Araucana who hasnt ate drank for a few days) I bought some B12 with K and put it down there beaks. They have never been around adult birds and are not on dirt. How does a bird get Mareks, that is one thing that comes to mind or vitamin deficency. Please help. I had other chicks in the brooder room in the garage.

For Mareks, they would have to have contact with a wild bird or be kept in an area where a bird currently or has previously had Mareks. (transmitted through dander)

There's no way they have coccidiosis? Puffed up looking?

They usually sell for from $10 to $15 each, so it is a little pricy, but 4 EMU??? OMG! Been wanting them for 30 years.


I used to do the lockin chaparoning and I'll tell you what. I can go days without sleep at ...............oh hack cough choke!!!! Just tuened 56 on the 3rd. So depressing. When I was younger, I could keep up alright, but my kids HATED when I did it. I guess I had more fun than the kids and I embarrassed them. The high school dances came up and my second oldest almost cried while she handed me a note from her principle asking me to do those. I told her I just didn't think I'd be able to and she got giddy and said "Oh that's to bad mom." I told her if she REALLY wanted me to I could work it out and she said "Oh that's alright, I know how busy you'll already be with dresses and stuff. It's fine." I swear she was on the phone for an hour trying to get her friends as excited and they were all bummed cause I wasn't going. LOL Yeah, ya feel the love during those teen years.


I got one out of 25 eggs to hatch for my first chickens of the year. One little Blue Copper Marans and I can tell by that honkin comb that it's a cockerel. I did a staggered hatch in the Sportsman and my humidity was way up, so the aircells were so small. One other pipped, but by the time I found it it was DIS and it was so big that it just couldn't manuver. Don't have much hope for the other 23, because they are so full of chick I just don't see anything hatching. I have at least 3 more hatches before the Easter hatch, so hopefully I'll have no more humidity issues. Quail are popping out every few days and those things will hatch with no moisture.

Yup! My luck is running it's usual course for a big hatch along. LOL Not setting the usual 100 plus, probably just eggs for my own breeders.

BTW, welcome to all the new signups. I don't think most people realize how big these get.

Not being on the ground might be part of the problem. They have no defense against things brought in. Like on shoes or cloths from the feed store. Baby chicks raised in the coop from day one with a mom rarely get ill. They build up those immunities. I am really sorry your chicks are ill. Adding childrens vitamins with out iron might help. Sounds like you are doing all you can. I try to recomend to others get them on the ground at day three or bring the ground to them. I dig up a plug of grass that the older chicks and chickens have been on. I put that into the brooder. It is like a little Island for them to romp on and dig in the dirt. Sometimes we clean too much for our chicks. Having a steryl environment and than changing that environment is a shock to the system. Some have a hard time coping. Good luck with your baby's.
