The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

I hadn't planned on an Easter hatch, but that's when my 2 batches of shipped eggs arrived, so here I am!

15 Ameraucana
11 B/B/S Marans
24 homegrown (mostly Oliver x Welsummer, Oliver x Cuckoo Marans, and a few BCM x Cuckoo Marans)

My turner is overloaded so I am looking forward to culling this Friday. I peeked at a few though, and am seeing plenty of development

First time incubatorer here... so I candled two eggs that I set on Saturday, March 9th. One of them had obvious veins, but they were all around the yolk. as I would slowly turn the egg, the yolk would float. Is that normal? The other egg also had veins, but it seemed a little more firm and the yolk didn't float as much. Is one doing better than the other?

We just candled the 5 eggs that are not in the turner, 3 are showing life. Other 2 we cannot tell. I set at 10 PM saturday as the egg supply fell through and I had to locate other eggs. We got 46 black star eggs set. We will candle friday night and weigh.

I've never had a problem with eggs like that and have had them hatch. I don't think it's anything to worry about, but maybe some else will have some input on it.

just candled a few of my lighter shelled eggs and i see veins! I am super excited because my rooster is so mellow and timid- i have never even seen him try to flirt with the ladies but apparently he does when I am not looking

I candled today too. All the home eggs are developing but the swap ones are not looking so hot. Most of them have several smaller air bubbles with blood rings. Is there any chance for them to develop?

Very normal..if the egg is fertile!! I love when I can see the yolk float ~ slowly ~ to the top. If an egg is too dark to see the veins, I am excited to see the dark yolk go slowly upward.

When candling early or candling dark eggs (like many excited participants will be doing) you can use a bright flashlight with a strip of foil wrapped around the beam, with black electrical tape on the outside. This helps keep the greatest amount of light inside, thus flowing through the egg. This also allows the collar to shape to the egg, which prevents that crack of light where most flashlights meet the egg- this crack of light keeps us from seeing as well as we otherwise might because our eyes can't fully dilate.

One more thing- our best vision is actually our peripheral sight, and thus if you look an inch or so to one side when you cant be sure you're seeing movement, you can actually tell whether there's movement a lot better!

Crazy girl!! I did that a couple of times, but my coop isn't big enough to sleep in without getting in poop, so I stopped that kind of hatching. I figure one day he'll be too senile to care.

Nice brooder. Looks a lot like what my hubby built me. Only difference is we made a lid so they dont fly out when the realize they have wings LOL

He made me a lid also it is made out of Peg board but we don't need it as yet and our young'ns LOVE to peek over and watch the chicks .....psst. So do the older young'ns too!!!! ;-)

I just showed this to my DH..and told him I want one like that.  He said, hmmm.  Bet I could get him busy on it.  he he
