Here is the cheap candler that I made similiar to what my dad made 50+ years ago.
The red lid is a coffee-mate lid as it fits tighter. I cut the hole out smaller than I want and then wet an eating egg to flare it larger. When the hole is too large, just cut cardboard to fit over it. Last pic it is ready for storage. We candled 5 eggs twice and are doing all 46 tonight.

Yes, I would love ideas on this! I have several in this hatch that I would like to be able to mark in some way, in case they aren't easily discernable by color, to track them knowing who their mother is.

Besides purchasing chick sized leg bands that is...

I've been wondering... How do you mark chicks so you know who came from which egg and subsequently who it's parents are? Do you have to take each chick out during the hatch?

Place eggs in small baskets from the dollar store in the hatcher to keep them seperate. I'm told small drop of food coloring on their heads or backs when you move them to the brooder works. I've never done that, however. I would imagine it needs to be diluted.

This is a lot like the one I made but I used a new 1gallon unused paint can from Home Depot.

LOL! I was just happy last night that I found 2 strong Cochin embryos, and some signs of life in a few others(thought the whole batch was a loss). The Barnies mostly had some veining, but weak. They are on the cooler side of the incubator, and the stronger embryos are on the warmer side. I think I'm going to swap them today, and then again in a few days. One thing though, in most of the shipped eggs air cells the fluid is still rolling through. I'm gonna have to hatch them standing up, aren't I? Another first for me. This batch is definitely a work in progress, but it'll be worth it in the end.

Yes, if they have detached air cells, hatch them upright in egg cartons.

I want to know how to get quotes inside of quotes. I can't figure it out!

Separate via plastic containers or separate incubators.
