This is the HARDEST thread to keep up on! And we're still 2 weeks away from setting!!! Hahaha! All the info on shipped eggs is very interesting!

So I'm thinking of hatching out Rhode Island Reds this hatch. I know that they are very popular and are supposed laying machines. I also get the sense that they are big-meanies in the flock. Is this true? Any input on the matter? I am reluctant to bring in big-meanies... we already had one and are still recovering from the damage she did!

I will be but first I want to hatch from them and raise a few up to see what type of offspring they produce.

It really depends on what you get. Most of the Heritage RIRs are very friendly. Production reds are what most folks call RIRs now.

There are big differences between them. Find someone on BYC that has one of the RIR lines that go back a long time. You can tell by looking at the flock. Shape, color and size.

Ok. Good idea. There is a local BYCer who I'm getting the eggs from. I'll check and see if his are from production strains.

She is a cool bird. Do you know what you would get if you bred her to a regular barred rock.

Black barred split to chocolate. The chocolate would appear again when her babies are bred together.

Thanks she is the sweetest bird in my flock of sweet birds and she just finished moulting so her brown is browner and her fluff is fluffier!

I tried to encourage our veteran broody BO to think about sitting again yesterday, by giving her extra eggs while she was sitting in a nest to lay her egg. She took them readily enough, but later I found her out running around with the others. Oh well, she has TWO WEEKS to think about it. Meanwhile I will air out the Styro Incubators and prepare to start eggs in them if necessary.

I am sending broody vibes your way ))))))))))))) I want to play with these peeps. We have anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks for springtime mama magic to take hold

I just had a hen go broody. Why couldn't she have waited for the 29!!!!!

Yayyyya!!!!!! That gives you time to make sure she is serious and arrange for the perfect eggs. Hold her off with Golf Balls she will be fine!

My RC HRIR were some of the calmest, nicest birds I have ever owned. Not a mean bone in their body.

Good! Keep sending the positive vibes. The internet is hard because there is so much information... and I feel most people use it to complain, rather than praise... thus I found a lot of negative reviews... but it sounds like a lot of people have had good experiences with them.
