Came home to first baby out. It's one of my backyard mixes and it totally looks like it's going to be heavily bearded! And it's beautiful. I haven't opened the lid yet due to so many other pips, but I took this photo through the lid.
Just about 45 minutes ago I heard a loud cheeping from the 'bator and went in to find a freshly hatched chick from one of my blue eggs. It looks like it will be a smooth headed EE, but if I'm lucky it will be a frizzleNo photo yet cause it's on a side of the 'bator that is hard to light for photos.
My wrong-end pipper from this morning does not appear to have made any progress. No additional shell cracked and only a small additional tear in the exposed membrane. How long should I wait until I try to help? The chick pipped at least 15 hours ago, probably longer since I was asleep when it pipped.
Tons more pips and getting so impatient. Got the brooder stocked with food and water and the lights are on to get it up to temp. Will probably put the babies in there in the morning just to be sure it's holding a good temp and cause I don't want to open the 'bator lid unless I absolutely have to until a lot of these pips have hatched.
Should I be worried that the membrane where he knocked the shell off is opaque?Wait it out. The chicks that have hatched already had their internal pip moment that you never saw. They rested and acclimated their lungs, and started absorbing yolk, all before you ever saw the 1st pip of theirs. When you saw the upside down baby's pip, that was his first encounter with breath and absorbing the yolk. He's having his rest moment. He'll be along shortly I'll bet.
