carriebain, Marek's is inevitable for all of us. If we have adult chickens who have not displayed symptoms, they are resistant. Certain strains are more resistant than others even within a breed - last year I lost every single one of the 25 Speckled Sussex I purchased from a breeder - absolutely stunning birds, it just about broke my heart.

Birds between the ages of 5 weeks and 5 months of age are the most susceptible. It is rare to have one survive once symptomatic. I have one that has survived and recovered, a RIR hen, thanks to my very DH who nursed her through it, and thanks also to the will to live this particular bird has - she started laying during recovery! She was also older than 5 months when she became symptomatic, so was physically more capable of fighting the virus. She is still not 100% so sleeps in the house at night, but she goes out to her own run every day, walks, and gets stronger and stronger. We think the reason she survived is that at her lowest point, we ground up grower crumble with my stick blender, mixed it with water to make a pretty runny paste, and started hand feeding her. Two days later she seemed to be a little perkier, and started eating her mush right from the container - she would eat a couple of ounces at a time. She also got Poly Vi Sol twice a day, 1 cc each time.

The harsh reality is, 99% are going to die no matter what you do. The survivors are rarely able to live normal lives. There is no way to avoid exposure, and my personal choice has been to raise a resistant flock, rather than vaccinate every single chick at hatch.

All that said, I am deeply sympathetic and strongly encourage you to hatch from your adult, healthy birds. Unless they came to you vaccinated, they are resistant.

Blarneyeggs, good grief! Hope a plumber is on the way! I guess this is one time leaving to have a root canal sounds like something to look forward to LOL

X2!!

Some cool things about chickens.....

The chicken has pneumatic bones, making its body lighter for flying, if it had not lost the ability to do so.

There are 13 air sacs in the chicken's body, again to make the body lighter, and they are a functioning part of the respiratory system.

Chickens have comparatively short life spans. Some live to be 10 to 15 years old, but they are the exception, not the rule. In commercial egg production, birds are about 18 months old when they are replaced by new, young stock.

I'm not going to be able to participate In the hatch-along after all. I'm pretty sure I have a marek's outbreak in my backyard flock

I sent one chicken to get a necropsy and am waiting for those results, now a second chicken is limping (my favorite too) I'm very sad and devastated that this is happening. I have never dealt with this virus before and I'm sure all my chicks and young pullets have been exposed to it. I can't imagine hatching knowing I have a virus running rampant. I have 30 6 week old chicks that I'm growing out for someone, I can't possibly sell them now, right? If anyone would has dealt with marek's in their flock who can give me advice pm me? I could really use your help right now. Thanks everyone!

This heartbreaking. I am so sorry. I can't imagine going through this. I am also one that has not gone through this, or anything that would wipe out a whole flock..I just can't image. Would like to know what the results are when you get them! Good luck to you.

Just ordered my spot check from Brinsea. Hope this helps my current hatch rate.

I am beginning to suspect that winter in Pennsylvania is never going to end. All waterers frozen solid this morning (again), what was new was a pipe outside of the house burst so water is turned off in the house. We have a stomach bug.... read: no flushing toilets. I'd like to lie on the couch and cry, but time to get to the dentist for my root canal. Oh Joy.

Oh Boy! It sounds like your having quite the day...

I hope things get better
