The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

There is chirping coming from the bator! This hatch is taking forever! I swear when I used to hatch in my hoverbator, I always had pips on days 19 and 20, but not anymore. The Brinsea is always right on time. Everyone hatches on day 21. I guess it probably does say something about the accuracy of the thermometer, and probably means it doesn't have warm and cool spots, but still. I'd love some early birds!

So I have a new chicken issue unrelated to the hatch-a-long. My Jaerhon, Dottie, has started laying an egg every evening right from the perch where she sleeps. Every day I go to lock up the birds, and there's Dottie on her perch, and on the coop floor, 5 feet underneath her is her egg...every...single...day. What gives?? Anyone ever have a chicken dropping eggs from their sleeping perch?
yes- i had a hen do this at first i thought it was a fluke, but then it happened every day. I have no idea how to fix it though, a raccoon got her late last fall

Around 3:30 this morning I went downstairs to check the bator and found one of my pipped eggs halfway zipped and watched it hatch out completely. (which never gets old) Then this morning 2 more of the eggs had pipped. When I got home from work today I had two fluffy little chicks!! YAY! I also had all of the eggs pipped and one that was in the middle of zipping.

I have a question about the one zipping. I know that after pipping it can take a long time for them to finish the hatch, but what about the zipping stage? Could that take a really long time too? I ask because I have noticed that on the edges of the inner membrane there looks to be dark red in some areas (blood?) also on other places, it looks that the membrane is glued to the chick. I haven't seen any progress since I got home about an hour and a half ago. The chick is breathing, peeping

and does push on the shell some, but I can see the beak because of the angle the egg is at and I was concerned if the chick can't turn. I haven't really seen this before so I thought I would ask. I'm attaching a picture but it isn't the best. Thanks in advance for any insight!
It looks stuck.

Quote: Ditto!

Quote: you will have to break pcs of the shell off him and then yes, use warm wet papertowel and get him all cleaned up, if he needs it you can run warm water and gently wash him with dawn dish soap, do NOT get in his NARES! (nostrils) its the quickest way to get them clean, keep them warm and then dry off with a papertowl or clean washrag and put him back in the bator to fluf up.
Agree completely.

I have an early pip, RIR/Lt.Brahma cross.

Has anyone crossed these two before?
No, but I have done Welsummer / Light Brahma.

First two! From olive eggs and look to be yellow like their mom was when she started. So, is white a dominate color? The roos are silver, black, blue, or red.

There is a dominant white and a recessive white.

Congrats to those of you seeing action in your incubator! And for those that aren't, be patient. I know it's especially hard when you see a bunch of others getting chicks.

Since DH set the eggs later on the 29th and then added eggs a day later, he waited until today to lockdown. Well, he was startled when he heard chirps when placing them in the hatcher. He has never experienced that because of where the incubators are kept at his work. Hopefully we will have some chicks in a day or two.
