at what age can the chicks go on to just sawdust? I have kept mine in their brooder on old tea towels over sawdust but the little critters seem to be monstrous little poop machines and I am changing the tea towels 4 times per day.
I cant believe how much poop they produce!
they are 4 days old so far.

thank you, I just took the tea towels out, they seem quite fascinated by it. I put a bit of apple wood stick in with them that has a little moss on it. they love playing with that and pecking at the moss.

Question for you guys that use broodies....If you use a broody to hatch chicks in the coop, and can put food and water in the coop.....what about the ladder...do the chicks try to go out the door and fall out or go down the ladder and can't get back in? Or does mom keep them in the coop ok? Mine is about a two foot drop from the doorway to the ground. Wondering if you have to move the mom to ground level or if it can be done in the coop.

This is the first time I am using broodies, but that is what I did. When she tried to leave the nest the chicks wouldn't follow because of the drop. So, I moved the nest box to the floor of the coop. Now, there are no more issues.

@Happy Chooks Have you seen this yet?

Yes, I've seen it.

I'm not convinced. The bees cap the honey when it gets to 17% moisture content. If you extract uncapped honey, it will ferment. I still don't see in this set up how you would know that all of the honey is capped and ready, without opening the hive. I'll be watching as time goes on and more people start using it. For now, I'll stick with my current set up.

I just put my honey super on today!

Now they are collecting for ME!

This was a very difficult contest for us to judge, as there are so many outstanding entries. It was very close among several entries.

The winner of the Broodies and their Babies Contest is..........

Congratulations!

It was time for us to decide on the Best Hatch Participant. This award goes to a member that is supportive and helpful of others during the Easter Hatchalong. (excluding those of us running it)

We just couldn't decide between 2 of you, so we decided to give you both the prize.

Congratulations to Cynthia12 and chicken pickin!
You have both won a 1 year GFM!
