The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I found that the preschoolers were very careful with the chicks. It was very cute!

Well these kids around here are... Well... Different... They are very rude, and have no anything... It is strange, the school is a national best, but they parents never teach them how to do stuff so I would be nervous taking something that is as fragile as them... I have had kids accidentally drop them at my house... So another one of my fears... Luckily nothing has ever gotten hurt...

I have done hatches with a local preschool the last 2 years. The first year we didn't have many hatch even though we used my Brinsea. We figured out that the temps dipped on the weekends too much for the Brinsea to compensate for - it would get down to the 40's in the classrooms over the weekend. Last year I incubated the eggs at home and just brought the incubator in for the hatch. Worked out great. Of course, my favorite part of the whole thing is teaching 20 - 25 preschoolers to go "Peep!...Peep!...Peep!..." all day to encourage the eggs to hatch!

Yes, I'm not sure how well it will work with 25 1st graders being in proximity for 3 weeks, but I plan to keep the "just in cases" incubating at home to replace any that don't make it. The cabinet is generally reliable, so hopefully there will be chicks for them to watch hatch. I am not certain if they turn down the heat on the weekends in the school or what. Could always bring them home for the weekend, too. :)

I pretty much count on switching out the eggs right before hatch time with some healthy candling wigglers. Fingers crossed for the kiddos to get to see healthy chicks.

Never ordered online, I stick with feed stores.

Sultans are the 2nd best breed ever, IMO! (Only one that beats 'em is OEGB.)
Lovely plumage, but roos tend to be on the nasty side. I can't really give em a fair judging though, as I have only had one, an agressive cock. Lovely lil guy when young, would come when called, sit, fall asleep in my lap, and some other stuff. Then he became a teenager.....
I'm planning on getting some hens soon though, and then I can review them fairly.

I have an EE I bought as a chick that looks just like yours with the random black throughout. Only one I have like that. I hope she gives me chicks that look just like her.

I don't think I'll be lucky enough to get the blue eggs. Nice that your girls are laying blue!!

She looks like my Dalmatians.

I think its the same color genetics as found in Paint Silkies, if that helps you guess what the chicks will turn out like.

Easter Eggers have to be one of my favorites. Yours are GORGEOUS!

All three are of my pullet, Dodie (named after the author of 101 Dalmatians)

I'll go over there...

e any difference as far as hatching. I put mine in a basket/baskets to keep the mess contained first and foremost...and I always stagger hatch so it keeps me from turning the wrong eggs by accident.

I LOVE the dollar store and their baskets!! 'Cause that's where I get mine too!

Ok, the chicks stay sort of contained...lol. I did use a plastic container with higher sides and no perforation to contain the last hatch I had. I have a lot of air movement...but I found it worked fine too.

I also use wire stationary racks to stack the eggs to get more eggs in...although that can be a bit hairy (and scary)

or to hold my pudding cups to increase humidity. Some of the eggs in red had damaged air cells so they've been upright in that rack the whole incubation. They hatch this weekend.

LOL!!!! I want to take some to my brothers class, but some of those kids freak me out, especially the parents... I wouldn't like letting them hold them, because knowing them they would squash them... Which is my nightmare...

Atleast my brother is starting to get into it, even though he is scared of the geese... He wanted sultans so I got him them, as long as he takes care of them at shows... I wish all kids could have parents that care enough to teach them about animals..
I had a friend take some eggs to her son's school. It's a church school and the eggs hatched over Thanksgiving during a service. There were parents that were HORRIFIED that their children were exposed to something so gross..... I bet the kids weren't horrified!!
