The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I had to do the same thing with a golden sexlink chick a week and a half ago-she was all alone. Loved the teddy bear but would still cry every time I walked past the brooder. Finally gave up and bought a silkie chick to keep it company.

I should use that excuse to get more chicks too! Lol.

So, here I am 22 hours into Day 22 and I have 2 chicks and 1 pipped (and chirping) egg left in my bator. My fertility rate is down, probably because its winter, but its only 68.75%. My hatch rate is about average for me, 77.27%, with 6 early deaths and 9 late. That gave me 51 live chicks, but so far 3 have not thrived in the brooder, and the 2 in the bator are struggling. I'll give them another 24 hours before I cull or transfer to the brooder. I had to assist this one out of the shell, its head hasn't straightened out yet. A spraddle-legged chick. He just won't keep his feet underneath himself. Hopefully the last egg will hatch normally, its certainly making lots of noise.
Here is what I do when I have a chick that just won't get their legs underneath.

And here is one more example of how someone else did it

You are basically creating a baby walker device for them. You get them in a standing postion, making sure they can put some weight on their legs. The little chick here took two days and she was able to hold her own weight. Hope that helps!

OMG that is wonderful I have been trying to teach my dogs to chase the chickens off the porch, hurting them has never been an issue, my issue us that the chickens are not afraid of my little Dachshund, and my great dane is scared of the chickens LOL go figure

Lol our dogs are smallish, it took a while to train the chickens to run away, and recently our awesome older dog died and the younger one is afraid of chasing the chickens without her. So they are coming closer to the porch now and we have to run outside yelling like crazy people to chase them off

We have a really nice porch that collects the sun and is usually 20-30 degrees warmer than temps 30 feet away so of course the chickens want to come up all the time lol

We have a Aussie mix puppy and though we never trained him even for a second how to herd he will herd those chickens to his best! He tries to line them up, get them all together, and then bring them to one place. However, unlike ducks, chickens tend to scatter.

As for our porch, we had to put up a fence because the chickens weren't only going on the porch, they thought going on the road during heavy traffic was a brilliant idea also.

Anything set within +/- 2 days of set day counts for the Hatch guessing contests.

Anything set outside this window are welcome to join, but we can't count them for the hatch totals. In order to manage these contests and record everyone's numbers, we have to have deadlines.
Sorry I wasn't very clear... I will set them all on the deadline:)

I can picture the chickens scattering instead of lining up!

Sounds like my favorite Hepsiba, only she doesn't think she's a dog-she just loves me. She follows me all over the yard and even looks for me when she hears my voice through a window. I swear one of these days that she'll figure out the dog door and follow me inside the house...
She sounds so sweet, lol once she figures it out there will be no stopping her!

AWESOME!! do you know what your gonna hatch?

So i got a Little Giant incubator off the local swap shop, with egg turner, but no fan. So i took the fan out of my DIY styro bator, cause my chickens ate a hole in the side of it, and put it in the LG. Been running it for about 5 days now and the temp seems to be pretty steady so i put 6 eggs in this morning for a test run before the EHAL.

here's hoping it does a great job.

Good morning chicken holics, and other feather babies parents. I set 8 dz eggs last night and am going to go list some for sale on ebay and my chicken forum then off to work on building three more paddocks, Feed, water and play with the fluffy butts while they look for goodies in the rocks and yard. Then off to work. Hope your day is fun.

I personally really like these bators, use them all the time. I just got 1558 with the fan. It's working well too. :)
