The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Hey all long day here. Started with each bird getting dusted before being put out for free ranging for the day, including the aggressive roo, which was quite a feat to catch him. It was about forty, maybe more, so we let Jazzy(Jasmine) out with the flock while we cleaned the coop, nest boxes, quarantine crates and dusted everything that needed it. Then we let the dust settle and coop air out and put all the birds to bed.

Jazzy's crop was almost completely empty this morning except for a small grape sized bunch or so. We allowed her some crumbles and gave her another dose of stool softener and baby food. We also picked up a powder that contains vitamins, electrolytes, and probiotics for her water and the whole flock. She is locked up again tonight and will not get any more feed until we check her crop tomorrow. We wanted to see if her crop was working as it should be again. Still no smell coming from her mouth, and no other symptoms. Fingers crossed that her crop is empty. If not we will try the doughy crop treatment, for which we were able to find all the ingredients today. Her appetite has returned over the last two days which I take as a good sign.

How long should we wait before worming the flock? Can we do it this week or not?

Will I still be able to collect eggs for hatching if we worm them this month?

On another note one of our silkie cockerals wore a nail to the quick or broke it somehow. Not sure how/when it was like that at bed check and of course was bleeding like a stuck pig. The styptic powder managed to slow the bleeding so it could clot naturally. Even after dipping it over 6 times it continued to bleed slowly for several minutes. No other injuries so I think he got it without fighting; this has happened to him one other time.

Will update you all on Jasmine tomorrow. Night guys, sweet dreams.

Next time you have a bleeder use sugar. It works faster and once dissolved in the blood it can pass through the cell wall and help repair the damaged cells.

Thanks I'll try that next time. He's fine today but his white feathers are going to have a red tinge for several days. It's too cold here to bathe him.

sweet!! gotta luv us some duct tape right?

Day 14 of my test hatch out of 41 we had 4 quitters. Praying for a good hatch at least better than my last hatch.
Oh!!!! good luck!!

I know at least a couple people on here were complaining about not having an incubator. If you are one of those and want it, I'll have a LG incubator w/ fan that I could send to you as soon as my new one comes and I make sure it works. I'd be there by the end of the month. Maybe you'll have better luck than me (especially if you have time to babysit it...) PM me if interested.

Edit: it has a home-built auto turner that I'll send with since it was built for that incubator. Works OK for quail or chicken eggs, but not so much for duck eggs.
awwwww that is awesome!!!

Looks like my Easter HAL is gonna be awsome, just cracked open 8 of the bantam silkie eggs to find the little white dots on the yolks.... WOO HOO I was worried because they JUST started laying eggs
Are they bulls eyes? Congrats!!! got pics of your flock? I forget if you posted some already!!!

Have a wonderful day Everyone!!

Hi sally

GitaBooks-I might try that. Just today,I noticed someone layed in a separate nest. And it happened yesterday, too. Usually, they all lay in the same nest. I'm thinking that that's an indication that one of my girls is growing up! And perhaps....wants babies as much as I do!!!!!! Yay!!!

God bless!!!
Glory

I sure hope she does.

I haven't seen an egg in at least a month =\ hope they pick up . time to look for eggs.

Yeah, mine are being a little slow to pick up also. I've got 50 chickens (over 15 of which are pullets) and I'm only getting about 5-8 eggs a day.

I hope Jasmine continues to get better.

As for the silkie, I've found mine have delicate nails that sometimes just rot and fall off or get twisted, not even bleeding. My poor broody silkie had really badly curled toe-nails and needed them trimmed over a few days so that I wouldn't clip the quick.
I know what you mean by having to dip in the powder a lot. We had a hen with a bleeding foot (small but deep cut) and we used cornstarch to stop it (I hear that styptic on the skin and not nails is bad) and she continued to bleed for a little while. However, she didn't even limp so as soon as it stopped I let her back outside.

13 hatched out of 14 set. I don't do math very well so I'm not sure what the hatch rate is.

Say hello to Skunk..

I think this one is from my light Brahma crossed with my Cemani x roo. It has black legs.

Such a riot of colors! I think I'll hatch out mixes a few more times just to see what we get.

Seramas went into lockdown today 18 looking good.

Adorable chicks! I can't wait to see the Seramas!

any pippers??

So, this morning, I went out and fed the glads (enjoying the fact I didn't have to carry water out because of the warm weather), let the five chickens out of the shed, let out the two recently "weaned" bantam babies from the broody pen where they sleep, and then let out my main flock in the chicken room. They all come flying out instantly and to get the chickens calm and not chasing me I toss food all over the ground then rush into the chicken room to let out the pacing broody hen, Princess, so she doesn't crush her eggs.
Then I have to follow Princess around for the next ten or so minutes while she eats, drinks, uses the bathroom, runs away from all the roosters that adore her, and sometimes dust bathes. I chased Dastan away from her because he keeps trying to breed with her while she is drinking and so she gets dunked in the water the poor thing.
After she has had her fill I catch her and put her in the crate. She looks around frantically, spots her eggs, and happily settles onto the nest for the rest of the day.

My other broody, Susie, has free access in and out of the nest because if I locked her in then she would likely break the eggs in the morning when she wanted to eat and drink. She comes and goes as she pleases but is doing a pretty good job taking care of them.

My eggs in the incubator (including one with some missing shell from a hen pecking at it) seemed cold this morning even though they were at 101 F so I bumped them up to 102 F. I so want these guys to hatch but I'm worried because the closet isn't available any more so I have to hatch them in my room, where the temperature fluctuates majorly.
love that name! Dastan!! good afternoon!
