I have a dozen true Ameraucauna eggs to pick up next week, and since Im a novice at incubating, Im thinking of having the professionals hatch the eggs for me in the coop. I really want these eggs to hatch, and think this may be my best bet, especially since I have 3-4 hens that want to be broody right now. Only concern I have is that it is still winter here in Western NY, and we are expecting subzero temps this weekend. Any thoughts ?
I am doing a test run in my incubator right now, I placed 6 eggs, all were fertile, but it looks like I have 4 quiters now, not a real good percentage there, that's why Im thinking have the girls hatch them out.
If you can curtain off their nesting boxes it will reduce drafts and allow their body heat to accumulate and stay warmer. That was one of the reasons for bed curtains in pre-central heating days to keep a person warmer while they slept even though the room might reach near freezing until the fires were built up in the morning.
