The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I have a dozen true Ameraucauna eggs to pick up next week, and since Im a novice at incubating, Im thinking of having the professionals hatch the eggs for me in the coop. I really want these eggs to hatch, and think this may be my best bet, especially since I have 3-4 hens that want to be broody right now. Only concern I have is that it is still winter here in Western NY, and we are expecting subzero temps this weekend. Any thoughts ?

I am doing a test run in my incubator right now, I placed 6 eggs, all were fertile, but it looks like I have 4 quiters now, not a real good percentage there, that's why Im thinking have the girls hatch them out.

If you can curtain off their nesting boxes it will reduce drafts and allow their body heat to accumulate and stay warmer. That was one of the reasons for bed curtains in pre-central heating days to keep a person warmer while they slept even though the room might reach near freezing until the fires were built up in the morning.

Lost power an hour ago. Have 30 chicks in the brooder and 50 eggs due to hatch next week in the incubator... not worried for now but worried they won't fix it for a few more hours. I am lucky, at least being in florida, it isn't cold out.
Ahhhhhhh I am so sorry.

Wrap a blanket around the incubator and, push comes to shove run to Walmart and get some outdoor hand warmer packs to pack around the eggs wrapped in a towel. Good luck.

Wow! Mine has been laying since 5months old. Guess I got lucky with her.
5months laying age is great! Barred Rocks are just great, is she the only one you have?

Mine are likely taking longer because they are Standard Bred, or "Heritage". They tend to take a long time to mature. I hope they start soon, I cant wait to start getting their eggs.

When that happens if you act fast and fill empty soda bottles with the hot water still in the water heater then wrap them in towels to slow the heat loss and put them in with the chicks.

Hmmm that just made me think of something. I am using bottled water in square gallon jugs right now. Four of those filled with hot water placed in a square with space in between them for the chicks with layers of towel thrown over to trap the heat in the space. Leave one opening so that if it is too warm they can step outside the tent and cool down.

My broody turkey lost both her babies today

apparently, they are ready to leave the nest and explore, and she wasn't. It's 32° here. Both were cold on the floor when I found them

so upsetting. I won't be letting any turkeys try again until it's much warmer out. The good news is that it didn't look like there was any damage to the poults which means the rest of the turkeys didn't bother them at all. They just got too cold.
I'm so sorry.

Yeah, she is the only one I have, but she is probably not "heritage" although I don't know for sure. She is friendly and lays almost every day.

Some one was asking what kind of eggs I could ship but can't find it. Don't think it was quoted. Anyway, I can ship cream crested legbars, Welbars, Black copper and White marans, Tye fly genetic hackle and a couple Isbars for now.
