If he is not mating, remove him from the pen where they are and make a new one for him and 5 girls. He may be overwhelmed with that many girls.

He does seem to be mating and I saw him mate two different girls on Friday morning within about 5 minutes. I just don't know if he's "hitting the mark." I might try separation if the eggs in this batch turn out to be duds.

One big problem with that may hens is making sure you get eggs from the hens he mates with. It is unlikely that he mates with all of them

Good point. I'm only collecting certain colors this go around. I have a pretty good idea of who lays what, or at least what breed. I plan to number my eggs and track so I'll record which weren't fertile. Then I'll have a better idea too.

I wish I could join, but I set eggs yesterday AND I have 12 four day old chicks and 12 three week old chicks (that I didn't hatch - they were won as 2 week old chicks), and 12 eight week old chicks. I think I'm done hatching for a little while...

Put the eggs in a carton and tilt one side a few times a day.

I have my first batch of chicken eggs in the incubator right now and they are supposed to hatch on March 11th (this is my first time ever). That puts me a couple days behind. Can I still participate? Any ideas?

+/- 2 days from set dates is fine.

Yes, you can still join us. If your eggs don't get set within the +/- 2 day window, we just can't count your eggs in the contests, but you can still hatch with us.

If this is the case, then I got 16 eggs - 8 double laced Barnevelders, and 8 Silver laced Polish. I gave 3 of each to a friend to hatch at a school. So, I set 10 eggs on Sunday, the 4th. I MIGHT have ordered another dozen eggs, that MIGHT get here around the 10th....
