The Blue Eggs
Barbara had been maintaining her routine for the past several days, but she was confused about something. Another Ameraucana sister had deposited a blue egg in the nest box. Now there were two Miss Uppity Blue Eggs!
What was the big deal? The Food People were excited and jabbered on and on about it. They said they expected to get more blue eggs soon. What did that mean? Maybe Barbara had to try harder!
On Monday, Barbara climbed into the nest box, smiled her sweet smile, sang the egg song and laid a lovely egg. When she turned around to inspect it, it was brownâsmooth and ovalâbut brown. Maybe she had to do something else.
Tuesday, she went to the nest box, climbed in and faced backwards with her tail sticking out a little. That was how those uppity blue egg chickens sat in the nest box. Maybe that would do the trick. The egg came just like Monday, smooth and oval and . . . brown. How did those girls do it?
Wednesday, Barbara figured maybe she had to "think blue" . Barbara thought about the sky and the lovely blue flower pot that held her favorite petunias until she ate them all. She looked at the beautiful blue floor in the coop (paint was on sale). âBlue, blue, blue," thought Barbara, âGo Blue!". The egg came. Brown. No blue at all. Not even speckles.
Thursday, Barbara was determined to lay a blue egg. She used the same nest box as the Ameraucana sisters, she sat backwards, she thought about blue, she hooked her toes over the back of the nest box and pushed. She pushed HARD! The egg came. It was beautiful. . . and brown. Barbara stomped off in disgust. How hard could it be to lay a blue egg? What could those goofy Ameraucana girls know that she didnât?
"Fiddle Dee dee", thought Barbara as she ran/flyed out to join her girlfriends, "Well, tomorrow is another day."
