The Banty Explorers

Barbara and Leroy had enjoyed the past few days of warm weather. There were lots of leaves to rearrange, although the Food Man kept sweeping them up. All the girls enjoyed leaf raking, so the Food Man had to sweep often.

The little Banties in the back coop were getting braver. They fluttered about the yard and came closer and closer to Barbara and the Big Girls, especially if the Food People put out scratch. They had a favorite bathing spot under the quince bush, and toddled around that back part of the yard for the most part.

Suddenly Leroy and Hot Stuff sounded the alarm! "Danger! Danger! Help!" The Banties had gone clear across the muddy garden and over to the neighbor’s house, where they proceeded to rake mulch and leaves on to their sidewalk. Several of the Little Banty Girls were flopping around in the mulch bathing at the neighbor's house.

The Food Lady went over with treats, but the allure of fresh gardening possibilities was stronger to the Banty Girls. After a while, she eventually got them back across the muddy garden and into their own territory. The Little Girls looked awful! They looked like marshmallows dipped in chocolate. Their beautiful white feathered feet were full of mud.

Barbara went back to her business and she and Leroy cruised the yard enjoying the warm sunshine. Later in the afternoon, the Food Lady came back from the store with magic bags! The Big Girls all crowded around before she could even get the door open. A couple of the ISAs jumped right in the van trying to "help" unload groceries. Luckily, the Lady had remembered to get treats for the girls, so there was a grape party right on the spot. Some of the girls got right up on her lap and ate treats directly from the magic bag. Barbara thought they were awfully pushy, but what could you expect from a Wyandotte?

Leroy would take grapes from the Food Lady, but usually used them to call the girls over to him. This time he seemed to realize that those girls were really pigs in chicken suits, so he accepted and ate grapes for himself. He had plenty of action trying to chase down all those Big Girls, so if one or two of them missed a grape, it was no feather off his fanny!

MrsChickenDad, your stories are great! i love the mental image of you all sitting about in the van having a picnic!

-Daisygirl, is that a Kiwi in your profile pic?!?! in the whole year i lived in NZ i didn't manage to see a single one. every time i went to see them at various places they were hiding (or i am totally blind). same thing with the tuatara, but i finally saw one in Invercargil.

I found the camera—in the workshop, where I am surprised anyone can find anything. (Chickendad is a Pack Rat!) so story has been updated with photos.

Note chicken picture on inside of coop door—I found it at a garage sale for 25¢; it says "Mom". The Big Girls' coop has one too, that one is "Mom and Dad".
