The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

New chicken keeper here and head-over-heels for beards, boots, and Easter eggers. Also like landraces & hardy dual purpose birds. What are my options?

I’m thinking about adding a Mille Fleur D’Uccle to my flock but how small are they exactly? My Americauna is small but would he be too big for a MFD? Is there another breed similar to MFD but larger?

I wouldn't worry about his size compared to theirs. I had the same concern with my big Orpington and some smaller hens, it looked really awkward at first but he learned to balance and finally get the job done. As long as yours has the nice rooster traits - tidbitting (calling girls for treats) and the girls are willing then it should be fine. If a larger rooster is too rough he could do a lot of damage to small hens.
He should work to make EE's with boots and beard/muffs.

The only dual purpose breed I know of with Muffs and Beards are Faverolles. Crossing Faverolles and Ameraucana is done often enough that people named the mix Favaucana.

My flock has started with EE’s I believe are a Welsummer roo, lavender Americauna roo, and 2 BCM hens. My favorite is the Americauna but I’m afraid his solid, pale coloring has made him a target in 2 predator attacks within his brief 4 months of existence. His coloring is stunning but I’m swearing off such novelties from here on out. My birds need camouflage!

Your welsummer rooster is actually an olive egger, probably a welsummer x cream legbar cross. Russian orloffs are a breed that is similar to d’uccles but larger.

Hello @nicalandia I hope i’m not being a bother. Could you possibly tell me whether this cockerel might have the silver gene? I can’t tell if he is heterozygous or homozygous for it, or if he even has it. Mother had the gene and father was split silver and gold I think.

By default he gets a copy of Silver form his dame, and I see that he got a gold s+ from Sire.

Big Fatty is getting close to laying, finally. So, that means I can start breeding her next year.

Gonna be breeding her the OEGBs, or Bantam Silkies though.

For Bantam Silkies, I've got Blue Partridge, & a Partridge for the Roosters, & for OEGBs, I've got Silver Duckwing, & Brassy Back for the Cock, & Cockerels.
Which of the birds would you suggest to use to breed with her?

I would use the Brassy Back OEGB
