The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

Pics
Ok! I just don't want to be too pushy or annoying, or interrupt anything that's going on. My last two questions (for right now, at least) are a) does having a hutch/enclosure for when they need to be confined have the same principal as chicken coops, with prefabs being over expensive, small, and cheaply made, and building a hutch/enclosure will give you better quality and more for your money?
and b) if you have both rabbits fixed, will your bunny be happier with a friend? If so, does it generally work better to have one of the same or opposite gender? These are my last questions for now, but I'm sure I'll think of more. If I get too pushy or annoying, please don't hesitate to tell me to buzz off. Thank you everyone for being so helpful!
You are actually helping the thread by asking questions! You are correct that the overly expensive hutches are often cheaply made. It is USUALLY easiest to bond two fixed rabbits of the opposite gender. Second easiest is two fixed boys. Third is two fixed girls. Last is a combo that has one or more unfixed buns.

This probably won't be for a while, but it does fit in with my evil plans to have 20 chickens, 6 ducks, 10 quail, a cat (possibly 2) and a dog. I'm trying to create a little farm for my future self to live on, and a rabbit fits right in! :lau

That’s the setup we have. A family of four, we have 3 chickens, 5 ducks and a drake, a fluctuating number of quail, and meat rabbits. Plus house pets (3 rats, 1 bun, 2 cats, a dog).

All this on a 7600sf lot on a main road. It’s all about fences and compost and maximizing space. We use a food forest model for our gardening. It’s TOTALLY doable to become more self sufficient and increase the biodiversity in any outdoor space! Even a balcony!

Thank you! I definitely will check out that channel. My main concern about free roaming at all was the pooping, I don't mind bunny proofing. I'm thinking that it would be a when I'm home, I could free roam, and when I'm not home I'd put him/her back in the hutch. (It's called a hutch, right?) Thank you for all the specifics on this! This has been so helpful!

I will be honest with you, the poop is a total non issue. As grazers they can’t always hold it, but we just pick up little stray poos with our hands and then wash them 😂 They’re very dry for the most part. My kids call them Cocoa Puffs.

It’s the pee that can really heck up your day, but that seems to be the thing ours have a specific “spot” for. Our house bun potty trained himself until he got old enough to want to mark. Now we’re just waiting for him to be old enough for his neuter surgery.

Can you show us a picture of your bunny pleaseeee?

I think that I've given up all resolve that I had to NOT live on a farm in the future-I changed my mind. I want a farm. I've also added sheep to the animals-I-want list, and possibly goats. And maybe horses. And maybe cows. Maybe I should just get all the animals.

Hey all, it has been a while since I posted here. We just added a male that we named Kevin. He and HopTart lived together before and they're back together. He isn't neutered but she's spayed. I can't make an appointment to get him neutered because of covid which is frustrating. Anyway, here's a couple pics

Kevin looks like my two girls! Solid black?

Yes, solid black. He's still very shy and hides quite a bit.
Mine have grey fur on the bottom of their feet.

One of mine is super shy the other isn’t. Today it jumped onto my leg while I was kneeling putting in their hay.

The hay I got has dried marigolds so now I have another treat I can get from the garden. I have lots of marigolds to keep some bugs away.

I’m going to dry some mint and marigolds and add it into their daily salads. My mint plant has had it with the heat I think.

Kevin has only been here a few days so I'm hoping he'll come around. I'm letting him get reacquainted with HopTart before I add to his world too much.

Nice that you're growing food for yours! I have nothing growing right now but have plans for a fall garden.

I have to wait for leafy greens, it’s way too hot so all they do is bolt.

It’s good to take it slow, I’m sure they’re weirded out by change like most animals. I’m sure they’ll be great and he will be less nervous eventually.
