*The City of San Diego, California - Chicken and Gamebird / Fowl Law*

Quote:

Coronado is a sand peninsula with a bridge connecting it to the city.
only 2 road leaving the "island"
Lots of $$ but even more military.
The Coronado cops are plentiful and payed well to do little more than mess w/ folks who may/ may not need it.
Most seem to be x-military and have little room for gray areas.

If you are dealing w/ the same thing god bless you sir, I'm sorry:cool:

The Union-Tribune's list is faulty because it fails to consider zoning codes which EFFECTIVELY make chickens illegal for many people even if chickens aren't 100% legal in the whole city. For example in La Mesa, only certain residential zones allow chickens. They are 1/3 acre lots or larger, east of the 125. Most of La Mesa cannot have chickens. We're trying to change this right now.

If you're in La Mesa and you want to help organize on this, please email me. I've put in a request to the city and they've tabled it. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing (even though it's a delay) because they DO want to talk about sustainability and local food production - they just want to do it as part of the general plan update, which will begin in 2010. So we're going to want to get in on the ground floor of that to influence the General Plan to be revised in a chicken-friendly manner. Then after the General Plan update, they are willing to consider a zoning ordinance change to allow chickens in residential zones.

My specific request was for up to 6 hens, no roosters. I've got a small list of La Mesa residents who are interested in legalizing chickens and I'd love to use that as an organizing tool so we can all communicate with one another. All of the details on what I've done thus far are here: http://www.lavidalocavore.org/diary/2937/the-chicken-project-san-diego-responds-to-the-uniontribune (with links to previous posts at the bottom).

For now, the only thing to do until the general plan update begins is to shoot off an email to city council telling them you want chickens. Their emails are (all are @ci.la-mesa.ca.us):

Coronado is SUCH a pain... I went to middle/high school there and my family still lives there. Of COURSE it would be the last holdout.

It's full of rich old people and busybodies who are very concerned with making everything exactly how they want it, and don't even get me started on the cops... they have nothing better to do than harass the "punk kids" and so that's what they do. I once saw the cops calling backup when they stopped a middle-schooler for the heinous crime of skateboarding on the sidewalk. No joke. The funny thing is that despite (or perhaps because of) all this, underage drinking, drugs, and partying is rampant. Coronado has just as long a tradition of partying, rebellious youth (some of which never grew up, haha) as it does of restrictive laws and grouchy old neighbors.

But the folks who have all the law-making power (and the ones who have nothing better to do than make a stink) are extremely conservative. It seems every year they add more bizarre traffic laws, speed bumps, and the speed limit is ever-shrinking on busy streets. Woe to the summer tourist who tries to drive here... But hey, maybe it'll keep them away.

Hm, my old history teacher, Casey Tanaka, recently got elected mayor, and he's a cool guy. Maybe we should be writing him...

Hello San Diego!! I am just seeing this great thread of locals with birdies, or hoping to have them! I have a backyard flock that are almost 10 months old! I am close to the zoo area. Is anyone near downtown?? Where do you get your feed? I'm looking for a close supplier. All information welcome.

We left the city of SD about a year ago but the closest place I had found was San Diego Pet Supply http://www.sandiegopetsupply.com/home.htm. It's located downtown at 1490 Island Ave. (the cross street is 15 St.), their # is (619) 263-2211. They had all the supplies I needed for my girls and everything was in bins so you could scoop as much or as little as needed. (They even have a trashcan full of food grade DE!) Also they have customer only parking in front of the store so you don't have to feed the meters!

sdChickie,

I have been meaning to contact you about this but I am too busy with school at the moment. In regards to your website with the Facebook Fanpage...are you able to gather those folks and suggest that we make a Facebook Fanpage for folks who would like to legalize chickens in San Diego?

That will help out alot too because that is just another network system that could help everyone connect before and there could be more to join the BYC Forum through Facebook...

Let me know what you think ; )
