It’s a long story. Let me tell you how things were before…That’s too bad. I guess there’s always next year though. What was your other news?
In our coop, we had four nest boxes. The chooks would generally sleep in two of them and lay eggs in the other two. But, as my poultry knowledge grew (as did the ever-increasing pile of chicken poop in the last two nest boxes), I learned that this was a problem. Chickens shouldn’t be sleeping in poo-filled nest boxes, as it’s both uncomfortable and unsanitary. At the same time I was reading about roosting bars, and why they were important.
SO- I talked to dad about it, pointed out the problem, and offered a solution. He agreed with my idea and l went in to do the work.
This is what the coop used to look like:
My plan was to take out these two nest boxes that the birds were sleeping and pooping in:
And put a little roosting bar there instead! It took me a while, but I finally got it done. It ain’t pretty, but it should work.
Now, now, I know what y’all are probably thinking: there’s no WAY he’s gonna fit all those birds on there when he gets new chicks next spring!! How is that even going to work?!
But guys, that’s the best news!! Dad said that when it warms up we’re gonna build an entirely new bigger, better coop!! So I’m very excited about that.
