The Coop You Need When Society Breaks Down

I think the "author" was just recommending a secure place, other than leaving them out at the back of your property line in a box like many do now.

I think there is little doubt that society here is headed for a fall, and Katrina showed anyone watching that those around you will not be your friends when it does.

With so many out of work, I don't understand why anyone would want to criticize others for warning you to be repaired to defend what you have.

For those who have lost their house and their jobs in the last couple of years, I assure you, this is very real.

Said much better than I would've.

Yes, and BEING a very real situation sometimes, it bugs me to see UNrealistic solutions being recommended. Like "you can provide for all your family's caloric needs by raising chickens in the garage if society has collapsed".

Chickens are useful. But stuffing a bunch into your shower or garage, or expecting to rely on chickens for a major part of one's food, is not a useful way to plan to utilize them.

Times are bad- 8 million jobs lost and counting in the US. Inflation is high and paychecks are low. Record number of veggie gardens and people raising livestock. People started stealing others flocks (around here) a couple years ago. I'm not too worried about my flock cuz the geese alert the rotterman and me and all my inlaws. There is almost always someone on my 27 acres at all times that will hear the geese. My newest issue is that the geese are getting WAAAYYYYY to used to the sound of 4wheelers and not always sounding the alarm for them anymore.

I think that having a plan IN CASE something goes wrong- be it natural disaster or TEOTWASKI is a great idea. I think that people who think they can survive in their home for the rest of their lives all by themselves are kidding themselves. I also think that the rooster will alert any passerby's of it's existence in said house. Otherwise, great idea. Oh, and grass has great protein (that we can't digest). If chickens can freerange and get all their nutrients, then we could free-range for them if need be. Production wouldn't be as good but it could work out. Could use silkies for brooding chicks easily or in my case BA's.

Now onto the maggotry- I DON'T THINK SO
There are much less disgusting ways to give the required protein!!!!!!!!

I don't think the author was implying that chickens would become the sole caloric source for the family (he said a chicken in the pot once a week), just that in a worst case scenario it could be an easily digestible form of protein that a person wouldn't have to hunt. Rabbit has protein but no fat (leanest meat on the plantet) (I hope I don't offend anyone) and you would need the calories that the chicken fat provides. Gathering nuts in the fall would be a better way to get the protein and fat (better in ease of storage, use and portability).

I agree that the article could have been written better......

I think it was just a poorly worded sentence Pat
He said in the paragraph above you would only get one meat chicken a week

I have to admire the author's determination to "think outside the box" for a possible disaster scenario, and what he suggested about a "bathtub coop" or garage is certainly doable for that one meal a week for his family -- not just optimum.

Maybe, like so many people scared and uncertain about the security of their jobs and their lives in this economy, he's doing the best he can with what he knows about chicken-raising. Even if most of us would do it differently if we had to be "covert."

Good for him.

My DH would lose it if I suggested this. We have a 1/2 bath we NEVER use, and I talked to him about brooding a few chicks in there. You would have thought I said I was raising goats in the house.

My chickens are useLESS. The only two old enough to lay are broody!

If society collapses, I'd be better off letting the looters take them. I'll just have to live off the freezer full of pheasants. Now, where's the backup generator to keep them frozen?

So this post is still here! the reason for the lose my mind & tinfoil hat situation is I dont think that a break down of society even one that is systemic calls for isolation. A break down in society I think would call for the exact opposite. those of us living in rural areas & small towns would be better of banning together pooling resources and preparing for those who will surely come ,both good & bad. when the large cities & metropolitan areas were looted ; nothing left to steal or eat there would be a mass exodus to our rural areas as you know people will do anything when they are desperate! The isolation, chicken battery in your tub, & moggotry plan may be useful if you are trying to ride out a nuclear winter, or ice age after a meteor strike. Just sayin!!!!!!!
