"The day my world turned upside down" story

"Run for it!" I howled the minute I saw the truck! So much for waiting at my house for my master to come back. It was obvious that he sent this truck. I guess he truly didn't want us anymore... that just shows how small a humans heart is... and how few friendships they can keep.
So as we ran through the woods, the only sounds were the crunch of leaves and the heavy breathing of our friends. Goldie clucked heavily as we ran, then squawked "Stop! I can't.... I can't go on.... my body can't... take it." With sympathy in my eyes, I halted and ran back to my friend. We found a better hiding spot, away from the animal control officer and whatever else was lurking in the woods. With the cold December breeze blowing into my fur, a chill went through my body. Snow began to fall and the wind grew stronger. Goldie cuddled between me and Gracie, Fido layed his head on Gracies neck and Cody layed his head on my back. With all of our body heat, we stayed there through the night, snow covering our backs in white crystals that glimmered in the moonlight. My head popped up when a smell came to my nose, and even in my sleep, I knew it was wolves. I jumped to my feet and peeked through the bush. At first, I saw nothing but a blanket of snow, but as my eyes adjusted to the night, I saw yellow eyes appearing in the darkness. My eyes turned to saucers when I saw more pairs of eyes appear, and my heart almost stopped when I saw one, that looked like the lead dog, sniff the air. His head looked on my direction and as he did, I froze. I didn't blink or breath. Suddenly, Gracie howled in pain! "The puppy!! OW! Its...its coming!" she whimpered. The wolfs now knew we were here, and started to trot towards the bush.

Inside my head I groaned… why did the wolves ALWAYS come when a serious, and sometimes painful, situation was about to happen? I looked at Fido, Cody and Goldie with a look that said, “And yet, my friends, we must endure another battle. A battle, that must be won! Gracie needs us!” Fido remained with Gracie, while Goldie ran out squawking, trying to make the wolves think it was only him hiding in the underbrush. But, unforntunately, 2 wolves went after Goldie, and the rest came trotting towards the bush we hid under…. Closer… and closer…. When suddenly….. “GRAAAA!!!” I growled as I pounced on the nearest wolf, biting his neck which quickly killed him. 2 others came at me, pounding into my sides. I escaped from their jaws and grabbed a hunk of fur from one’s shoulder. While all this was going on, Goldie ran frantically around trees and bushes, as the wolves still chased him. Cody fought as well, and he fought well. He had fought before, in fighting rings, so I was pretty sure he could handle himself. Me, being a terrier…. Is a totally different thing. I heard a call of help, and as I looked to where it came from, I was pounded to the ground by a massive wolf with one yellow eye and the other green. He had razor sharp fangs that hung out of his mouth, and his claws pierced my skin. I lay motionless, afraid that if I move, his nails will dig deeper… nevermind those teeth sinking into my flesh. I looked to where the cry of help came, and I saw Fido fighting off 5 different wolves, trying to protect Gracie. Gracie, being in the process of birth, was heaving and whining, trying hard to breath easy and not to collapse. Fido fought with all his might, but he could not hold them off. They surrounded him. I tried to move, but a evil growl came into my ears and hurt almost as much as the nails digging into me. I saw Cody being torn to shreds and as I saw him fall to the ground, he let out a yelp of pain. Cody, being a fighting, muscular dog who had probably been through many fights and pains, almost never yelped or barely made a noise. He always tried to be brave and acted that nothing hurt him. So when I heard that yelp, of deep pain and misery, I knew he must be experiencing twice as much pain as I was. The dog that stood on top of me suddenly broke the growls and fighting with a howl that seemed to cut through the air like a knife, and it stopped all the dogs in their tracks. “This… is what happens when you trespass on Razorbacks territory. There will be serious consequences… none that will be committed here, but in time, in time.” The evil dog said from on top of me… and when he said that, he sunk his razor sharp teeth into my neck, making my pass out from pain.

I awoke in the same place I passed out, in the snow, which was now turning red because of the blood gushing from my neck. The wolf was no longer on top of me, but I noticed the claw marks of where his huge, powerful paws had been. I looked behind to where Gracie was last and my heart almost stopped beating. Gracie, Fido, Cody and Goldie all lay in the snow, motionless. I saw no wolves, so I whimpered, “Goldie! Fido! Gracie! Cody? No!! NO!” They didn’t answer, and I didn’t even see their chests rising and falling. I stood shakily and started to walk towards them when I was once again tackled to the ground by a wolf. “So, you thought we left you guys in the snow to rot? We aren’t stupid! We’re going to eat you, after you are frozen and dead. Lay down, NOW.” He growled. With no other choice, I lied down in the cold snow again. “My…my friends… are… are they dead?” I asked. “SHUT UP!!!” he roared into my ears! I cowered in the snow and started shivering. Suddenly a car came tearing down the road… wait, we’re on the road?! I jumped up, pushed the wolf aside and ran over to my friends. I dragged first Gracie, then Fido, Goldie and just as I was going back for Cody the car skidded on the ice. It seemed to come at me and Cody in slow motion when suddenly I was pulled out of the way by Fido, who was now awake. I watched in horror as Cody was ran over and thrown through the air and smashed through the car’s windshield. “NO, CODY!!!!!!” I howled! I ran over to the car, which was now on its side. I ignored the human crying for help and ran to the body on the windshield. “Cody!?” I whimpered, “Cody. No!” I collapsed in whimpers and soft crys and moans. “Its all my fault! I could of saved him but I wasn’t quick enough…” I started to accuse myself when Fido growled, “It was not your fault! It was nobodys fault except the wolves!” “The wolves!” I suddenly cried, and looked to where Gracie and Goldie lay. They were gone, the only thing left to where their bodys were was big heavy paw prints.

I looked around frantically but saw nothing. “Looks like we’re gonna have to hunt them down.” Fido woofed. He looked over at me only to see me lying in the snow, crying and whimpering mournfully. “Buddy, its okay. Cody… Cody lived a good life, and if it wasn’t for you he would still be in that fighting ring.” Fido said sympathetically, trying to comfort me. “Lets go and save Gracie and Goldie!”
“Fido, I can’t.” I told him seriously. “Okay, lets…. Wait, what?” he suddenly looked at me confused. “I can’t. I’m too old. Too weak. I’ve been through to many journeys Fido. I can’t go on. I wasn’t whimpering and crying because of Cody. I was whimpering and crying because of the pain I’m in. You have to move on by yourself and rescue them…. My time on this earth is near the end.” I said. Fido looked at me with such a blank expression that I said angrily, “FIDO! Look at me! Do I look like I can go running into a wolf den and fight? I can’t! You need to be the leader for once and not a follower!” Fido looked at me. Blood coated my fur as the wound on my shoulder continued to bleed, my paws were bleeding from the cold, my eyes were bloodshot and mats were in my fur. I was skinny enough that he could see my rib cage. Fido looked at me and said, “I love you Buddy, I don’t wanna leave you alone to die. You’re my friend!” “Fido, GO! Go rescue my friends, and my family! Gracie needs to give birth and you need to help! I mean it, Fido! Get out of here!” I said real mean like. Fido trotted away, in sadness and misery, afraid to face the journey ahead of him without me. Sad that I had been so mean, I whimpered. I had too, otherwise he would of never left me and never saved Goldie and Gracie. So with one last look as my friend disappeared in the falling snow, I lied my head down and slowly my eyes closed into a forever, deep sleep.
