"The day my world turned upside down" story

They both stared at me for a moment, as if they couldn't believe what I just said. "What!" Rio clucked angrily, "We came all this way to save your hide, and you turn around and say no??!!" "Rio, I can't! You are all just gonna growl and push me away again! I'd rather be by myself then with a bunch of dogs who are supposed to be my family who growl, ignore and treat me like dirt!" I growled in his face. "They are only doing it because they love you and want you to accomplish things by yourself! I agree with them! You were becoming a wimpy puppy who clung to its mother like it was a baby!" Rio squawked, furious now. I glared at him, then walked stubbornly away, my snout in the air. "C'mon, Carrot." Rio said, sighing. "Lets go home." Carrot looked from me to Rio, then back again, then with a sad cluck, trailed after Rio. I marched through the forest, muttering angry words. After a short time, I started to thing logically. "Maybe, if I went back and acted like a grown up.... maybe.... just maybe they'd pay me some attention." I said to myself. No! What was I thinking? They wouldn't do that. I have to go out on my own. Forget about them. Keep going and don't look back. So I trotted on. I ran up a hill and started to hear beeping, honking and weird, loud noises. I reached the top of the slope and peered down. Below me, was a huge city with bustling cars that beeped non stop; there were buildings and houses, towers and lights. People wandered the streets and even from that very hill, I could smell hot dogs, french fries, ice cream, fried chicken and steak. "Welcome to the city, Tucker." I said to myself, then ran down the hill.

I trotted along the sidewalk, sniffing all the beautiful smells. Turkey... meatballs.... oooh, sausage! My nose led me to a cart where sausages lay on black tubes that twist them around and around, cooking the sides... making the juice snap and spurt into the air.... the smell was too much to resist. I put my paws on the cart and grabbed one sausage, Gulp! I grabbed another one off the steaming stove, Slurp! I licked my chops and I was about to grab another when suddenly a man noticed me and grabbed a stick. He waved it madly through the air as he came runnign towards me. Frightened he would hurt me, I zoomed down a alley and waited until the yelling stopped and everything seemed normal. I crept out of the dark alley and continued walking along the sidewalk, dodging people and making haste, to nowhere in paticular. A door suddenly opened with a "WHHHUUR!" and cool air drafted out to me. It was hot outside and having fur didn't make it much better, so I trotted inside. It was nice and cool and quiet in there, no humans in sight. A table with papers and pencils stood in the corner of the room, and next to it was a lounge chair and a leather couch. I hopped onto the cold couch and settled down for a nap when suddenly a women walked in and gasped. "Here boy..." She cooed, but I was already on my feet and ran to the door. It opened with another "WUUUUR!" and out I went into the busy streets again, the sun glaring down on my back. I panted and needed water. I looked around but all I saw was cement and people. Most of the people held bags or briefcases and paid no attention to me. I saw a lady pushing a baby in the cart and when I went in to give it a lick, she started yelling and shooing me away. She pulled out a small, shiny thing and pressed it a few times, then said to it, "Yes, animal control? There's a dog on the main street of the city, and its stealing food and harrasing my baby! Come catch it quickly!"

I understood some human words.... food, boy and good. That was all I knew, but from the sound in her voice, I knew I was in for trouble. I took off, running down the sidewalk, I heard angry yells from people behind me. Suddenly I spotted a park, and I ran into the street to get to it. "BBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!" A truck roared at me as I ran right in its path. Brakes squealed, I snarle and ran and just made it! I zoomed through tree's until I came to a pond, where I lapped water thirstily. Why did I come here? Why didn't I go back to my family? I'm not a loner, I like to be in a pack. My family will never think to look for me here, in a big city in a small park. That is, if they are looking for me. Rio probably told my family what i said, and my parents probably cried. They might of searched, but not for long, for they knew I didn't want them... when, really, I did. "Stupid, stupid, stupid! I ran away from the one thing I love!" I whined. I dropped to the ground, burrowing my head into some moss, pretending it was my mothers fur. "I miss you, mom." I whimpered. "A run away, eh? Well, no need to worry, young friend.... we'll help you find you're family." A voice said and my hair instantly bristled. I jumped around and assumed my fighting postion, ready for whatever will come.
