Yes, I am hoping to sell my extra eggs as well...I have 25 pullets!...and want more verities next year...yes it IS chicken math (1+1=0

) and while I love eggs there is no way I will eat all of them! but I do have a group of friends that want to buy them when available...right now they are paying 5$ a dozen for free range eggs! so if I got 20 eggs a day that would be like 11 dozen a week and if I sold them at 3 $ a piece that would be 33$ a week, 132$ a month, and 1584$ a year

I do the same thing!

Sell them for $4.00 per dozen. If you get 130.00 per month, you will barely pay the feed for 25 hens.

Tell you husband that you need an incubator and a rooster to make your money back

. Tell him you can sell hatching eggs for 12 to 30 dollars per dozen.

I had 11 hens last year. Currently I have 48. Next year I will need a farm at this rate....I did put one incubator back in the box though....

I have an EE roo this year

... and some marans...and some silkies.... can anyone say olive egger!!! and yes it probably will just cover costs...but they do free range all day and we have a 20 acre farm so I dont have to spend much on feed once they are grown but as chicks they do eat like monsters !!!!

and yea a was thinking 4$ but 3$ for extended friends or family of friends or maybe just donations and to my friends and family I just give extra chicks so they have their own eggs

Our agricultural agent said the going rate for fresh farm eggs here is $5-8 dollars a dozen! Don't shortsale yourself.

WOW! I though we lived in the cheap neck of the woods!!! haha I might just re-consider my advertised price! hehe...if I ever get to sell some eggs that is! It still seems so far away before they will start laying ....the first 5 (PR's) only have 2 more months to go (hopefully) but the other 20 still have 4-5 months to go

as they are only 4 weeks now

that puts us into Oct/Nov...do you think they will lay then, here? I have Sussex, Hamburg, Marans, EE's and Production Reds Or do you think they will wait till spring

If you live in south GA, you may get eggs. I can't really say in that this is my first time with chickens. But having done a lot of reading, some of your breeds should lay right thru winter. Some books say that a chicken will molt in the fall, but other books suggest that it is more like when they are 18 months old no matter what the season is. The lenght of the day makes a big difference, too. So if you want eggs thru the winter make sure they have some sort of light for about 14-16 hours a day. Some people put a light bulb on a timer in the coop. Anyway, I'm like you and am waiting for my first eggs! I have 6 that are 16 weeks old and 2 at 10 weeks and one at 8 weeks. Lots of different breeds. Want those different colored eggs!

They will lay! It may take a bit longer than average is all.

Production Reds and Sussex will lay through the winter even next year without lights. The others, if they start laying, will lay through the first winter--pullets usually lay through the winter. The second winter is iffy and depends on the Breed.

When they are ready to start laying for the first time I don't think it matters what time of year. My Buff Orpington, Barred Rock and RIR layed their first eggs in January and February and kept right at it through the shortest days of Winter. I don't know if it makes any difference, but I kept a light on at night in their coop -more for heat than anything else....some people keep a light on them to increase egg production...but again I don't think it matters so much for chickens just starting to lay eggs.

I have 2 EE's that will probably start laying in August or September.

And, then a Welsummer who hopefully starts in September. Oh, almost forgot, I've got Silkies that could start laying in July.

Silkies eggs do count, right?

I hope I get a pretty pink egg like that along with blues. I don't care much for the olive green, just my personal preference. Once I start getting eggs, I want to sell them for $4, but the problem is that other people sell them for 1-2 dollars. I am worried that people won't pay double for my eggs when they can get them so much cheaper. But 1-2 dollars is giving them away in my opinion.
