The EE braggers thread!!!

I don't post here often, but just thought I'd give an update on my EE roo:
He was killed by a raccoon. It's so upsetting! The little guy was so pretty! He was like a splash color. BUT I do have a few EE in the bator now hehe.
Here's my baby that was killed:

The two silkies were killed too <.< I am getting a padlock on the human door this weekend, seeing as all the chickens that were in the coop are now dead. I'll keep you guys updated with the ones in the bator though :)

I am so sorry

I hope you find the fix for the coons.

Sorry about your chicks!!! I hate that, and they always get your favorites, too :( You know, you can set a live trap halfway in, halfway out of your coop so it looks like an easy entry and I bet you could catch that booger. Worked for me.

Actually, I saw them last night. It was a mom and 3 or four babies trying to get in my brooder in the garage. So now my garage is on shut down at night, and I'm enclosing my run, and securing all entrances to the coop to hopefully coexist with the coons. I probably sound like a tree hugger xD but I just figure that we have 63 acres, and as long as we coon proof everything, there's room for everybody!

Well, to each their own :) I think it's nice that you're trying to co-exist. I guess I'm just not that nice when it comes to predators lol! Good luck though, raccoons are extremely smart, and can learn to get into almost anything.

I will co exist with anything TILL it eats my chickens. Then we have WAR! My only predators so far have been snakes. But I am sure that will change. I have my breeding pens pretty predator proof but I do have some that need to be up graded, when it gets cooler.

Yeah, I blame what has happened so far on myself. Should have realized that the latch wasn't good enough to keep a smart coon out. BUT if after I do all this if so much as one chicken gets killed they are OUT! No more Mrs. nice guy xD. My sister recommended that I sit inside the coop with the shotgun and see which unlucky guy opens the coop door first! Almost tempting after a sizzle, an australorp(Which belonged to a 5 year old that is devastated), 2 silkies, and an EE all went.

Last year, I had absolutely no predators. It was amazing, I didn't even have to worry about locking up at night if I had to be away so they could just come and go as they pleased. My coop is in my fenced in backyard though, so I wasn't taking too big a risk, I thought. It's right next to my house. This year, however, a predator just happened upon my coop with my new batch of chicks inside (probably sheer luck since we didn't have an issue all last year) and just kept coming back. I did the live trap like I described a couple posts ago, expecting to catch a raccoon, and you know what I got?? A great horned owl!!! It was truly an accident that I caught it. I had no idea an owl would even go for a live trap so I called game and fish to explain what happened, and the bird rehab specialist told me she hadn't heard of something like that in her 19 years of doing this. Luckily, I didn't get in trouble since it was an accident. I did have to let it go though. Fortunately, I think it had a bad enough experience that it hasn't come back XD

They will be back, they know there is food there and she has babies to feed..... it is hard to keep a coon out. They are VERY smart and can open just about any lock.......

If you want to set a trap you can relocate them..... 63 miles away
