The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

*sigh* literally right after I posted that, she started running around pecking other chickens

But if anyone has guesses as to what she had/has, I'd love to hear it!

New emergency

I have a 2 y/o EE hen and.... She is sick. This morning she was jiust sitting on the roost, surrounded by her buddies, and when we picked her up and brought her inside she started panting and didnt stop for an hour. We put her outside and she isnt panting anymore, but is still acting sickly. Right now she is sitting in the playhouse with a few of her friends.
Her poop is really tiny and runny, she is drinking a little bit, and we got her to eat a few bites of bread (quite easily in fact XD), but havent tried to give her any chicken food. Beyond not moving hardly at all, she looks perfect. Bright eyes, red (maybe a touch pale) comb, clean feathers, etc. We gave her some water via syringe while she was in the house. She is the only bird acting sick.
I suspect internal laying/eyp, but heck, ive seen six chicxkens die from that, so its become my auto assumption

Thanks in advance
Hi @PeepersMama

I'm glad to hear the she seems to be ok.

Have you ever had a fecal float test performed by your vet? It may be a good idea to take in a few fresh poop samples and have them test for cocci, worms and bacteria. This is useful information and let's you rule out a few common issues that can arise in chickens.

Keep watch on your girl - see that she is drinking enough. Since she seemed to perk up after you syringed water into her, she may have been a bit dehydrated.

Just a thought - hope all continues to go well

Hm, that's a good idea! We recently discovered the presence of a chicken living vet at our local and favorite vet office,so I'll look into have a float twest done. Thank you so much! :D

New Emergency

1. Mix of breeds: RIR, Brahma, Australorps and Barred Plymouth Rocks. All adult birds including, one hen with chicks, one hen sitting on eggs. Age range 1 year to 4 years old.

2. Almost the entire flock has come down with coughing and gurgling rattly sounds when breathing. Some are open mouth breathing. Symptoms are more apparent at night, but still obvious during the day just perhaps a little quieter. One hen has something going on with her eye as well. The eye has been closed, no discharge. I've been putting Terramycin in the eye as many times a day as I can. The eye is a cloudy colour.

3. Length of problem - 3 days.

4. Answered already - almost entire flock affected including roosters (chicks not yet affected).

5. No signs of trauma at all.

6. What I think may have caused this is my lack of attention to coop bedding. I noticed a couple of days ago that there was a strong smell of ammonia. I immediately put down an extra layer of litter (about 1 foot of rice hulls over top).

7. There is NO decrease in either eating or drinking within the flock. They have fermented feed every morning with powdered vitamins. They also have 17% layer feed. Yesterday they had chopped greens with chopped garlic, cayenne pepper, turmeric and parsley in an attempt to give them an immune boost.

8. The poop is watery - normal. It is quite cool here in Thailand in the mornings, but blazing hot during the day time. I think the heat during the day may be accounting for the watery poop at the moment. Not sure.

9..So far I have been administering Doxy-Sol (doxycycline hydrochloride 10.82 gram), not sure of the dosage I should be giving, but have given 1 teaspoon / 1 gallon water in the chickens waterer for all to share. Is someone able to confirm for me please if this is the correct dosage?

10. I need to be able to treat this myself.

11. Housing/bedding: I have 3 coops joined together with dividing walls, all sharing one run. Currently (unfortunately) the chickens must stay within the enclosed run and cannot free range. We are endeavoring to change this situation but it may be a few more months down the line yet. All coop/run litter is rice hulls. They have a sand bath, and a separate dirt bath with lots of charcoal/wood ash mixed in.

Really, my questions are: what dosage of doxycycline? and how do I manage the hen with chicks? This particular hen has only just started symptoms this morning. So far no sign of her chicks having any problems......they are about 2 weeks old.

Thanks so much for starting this thread.....a great service to everyone :)

Hi
i have a silkie roo who is about 4 years old now who isn't acting normal off and on the last few weeks .
Today he was hiding under something all day but day before he was out eating and crowing.
All ive notice off and on is a poopy butt
He doesnt have mites. i havent seen worms in his poo.no sneezing or gooey eyes .No other symptoms at all.
So im assuming i need an antibiotic what is best?

All the other flock members he had been with seem fine however i had put him in with a frizzle hen 2 weeks ago when he seemed ok i thought and another silkie girl for mating and last night the fizzle looked like she was sitting there hunched a little at bedtime or maybe im paranoid
.So what is the best all around antibiotic for him ?
Thanks ahead.
Please not being mean but only answer if your an experienced chicken keeper of some years or a vet or vet assitant .No newbie guess work.

hello, not so sure I would just toss an antibiotic at him in hopes it cures him. I would suspect worms or coccidiosis. Just because you do not see worms does not mean he does not have a load of worms. Can you have a fecal done by a local vet to check for cocci and worms? Just take in some fresh stool samples from him and let them take a look.

I've had issues like this before in our flock and generally it is cocci related.

thanks .I thnk i will take some poop in today
Ive had chickens 8 years and today is the first i read a grown bird around cocci since 8 weeks old can still get cocci. It doesnt seem possible as i figured they are immune. who knew? wouldnt they have to be run down in someway to get it at this age?

not necessarily. Dirty runs, warm excessive wet weather (really any excessive wet weather). Chickens always carry a load of cocci but it can get out of balance for many reasons
