The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Sorry for your loss.

Aw so sorry :( she was so beautiful

Thank you both. She was a beauty, no doubt about it. Sure will miss that big presence, but chickens generally just don't live that long, like dogs they go far too soon. A man who was here buying the last two large cockerels was just chatting and I said something about having so many old hens that I had no hens to give those boys. He said, "oh, like 4, 5 and 6 years?". I said, "no, like 8, 9 and 10 plus years". He was shocked, especially when I said that most of them are not completely done laying, either, including Amanda who is going on 11 years old.

I am feeling a little bit better. Hope the extra work getting ready for Irma doesn't set me back, but it has to be done. I had a lot already done, but there are always those pesky things that need to be done closer to the time of the storm's approach. Cages are all set up, so my chickens will safely reside in my garage during the thing. Dh was called in to work, so Dd#1, 3 grandchildren, and I are going to ride this out on our own. We should be fine.

Good luck with the storm, Cheryl. I'm glad you're feeling better. Hate that you have to do all the storm prep work, though. Just be careful and let others do most of it, don't push yourself too much.

So sad to loose a fine hen. She had a good, long, happy life.

Cyn it looks like Ida may visit you as well.

You must mean Irma will be visiting, LOL. Ida is on my mind still, too. We will miss that big, grouchy gal.

Yes, it does seem we'll get some of this storm Monday and Tuesday. EVERYONE is up here in our town, crazy traffic, lots of strangers. Tom says it would kill him to move, but yesterday, he said, there are too many people here, we need to move! LOL. It was nuts with all the "storm refugees". I said just say the word and I'll look further north into northeast TN. That's too far for the Floridians to come up to flee bad weather. And it's not the second home market that we are, with all sorts of folks who own cabins here.

Tuesday, Tom has to drive the Honda CRV to Cleveland, TN to get the airbag replaced-it's one of those that was recalled by Takada, but until lately, no one has had the part to replace it; they just kept sending us notices to cover their butts that it must be replaced ASAP. Cleveland is an hour away, down the Ocoee River corridor. Hope the river is not too high with all the extra rain that day.

I am worming my entire barn of chickens once again. Since we've had a different situation with having each group stay in the barn until their turn to go outside rather than all of them being able to stay outside in their respective pens as we used to do, and less time free ranging, I've seen more worms in poop than we have ever seen. And since I'm not sure whose poop it was this morning, will have to worm them all. Hector's pen and the Brahma pen were just wormed with Valbazen in July. I think Atlas's group was out first thing, with the Brahmas out next, and the last worming for Atlas's bunch was back in January so they may be the ones who deposited that wormy poop, just one big roundworm in one pile I saw. It was still semi-fresh so I'd guess maybe Atlas's group needs worming. But, I'm going to do them all, again. Sigh. Not fun. When they free ranged much more, I never saw worms, though I still wormed everyone about once a year.

ETA: Well, it's done. Every single adult bird has been wormed.

Mine are 100% free range and I've never seen a single worm, nor have I ever wormed them, so I think you are correct. Your chicken schedule sounds busy with all the rotating.

My shed is finally getting a side put back on, I will share some pictures later, unless they mess it up, my husband and two brothers are working on it.
