The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Government can't see into my basement so we are okay. Though some stuff is getting old so it's time to eat stuff before it expires and replenish our stock.

If things get really bad we got lots of chickens, goats, and turkeys we could eat, if necessary. I don't eat meat but would if I had to.

I never understood the advice to have 3 days worth of supplies, that's nothing. We only shop every 2 weeks after payday, so we always have at least that much on hand.

Things sure have gotten weird since I was a kid. Grandma taught me all kinds of depression era stuff. She used to wash out and reuse all plastic bags, and she never bought anything that wasn't necessary.

I would probably never eat my chickens, so much more to eat than them around here. We could hunt whitetail here on the property if we had to, certainly.

I'm really sick of some folks whining about how much they don't have, how they just don't know if they can pay their next house payment, blah, blah, blah, yet, in the next breath, they're going out to eat. They are nickel and diming themselves right into the poor-house and I have ZERO sympathy for that mess anymore. I know I made a YouTube video about it, but I got more of the same today from a family member. I'm just waiting for that person to come out and actually ask me for money. The answer is NO.

That's my brother and it drives me crazy! Took his family to Disneyland but a month later had to borrow money to get a new vehicle. He is constantly spending money on wants and then not having any for needs.

Exactly. We have never had a vacation and it's by design. I have no desire to blow $1-2K on a trip because society says we are supposed to have an annual vacation, then have nothing to show for it. I can buy a lot of real stuff with that kind of money. Plus, hotels gross me out anyway. And if you suggest to those folks that they should have more money at the end of the month rather than the other way around, they get defensive and say that you have an attitude. No, I have freedom and some cash on hand because I have some common sense and have learned to curb my "want-to's". I'm very tired of the whining. I think the proof is in who is not in financial trouble and who is, so I think that backs up that my advice is sound. If they don't want to take it, fine, but STOP the whining about being poor! Geez. I'm pretty fed up with that type, I guess you know.

I don't do vacations either, I also don't eat out, another place that grosses me out is any restaurant. I hear you on the gross motels/hotels.

I got a call on my co-op ad to sell the going-on-six-week-old Partridge Brahma males. He said, "you have some partridge Rocks for sale?".

Not sure how he got that idea. I have a PHOTO of them on the ad. And I say "BRAHMA" on the ad. He has Partridge Rock hens and no rooster. I guess he saw only that "p" word and jumped on it. But, how did he miss the picture? Sigh. He may still come look at them, but he had to ask the difference. Um, much larger, feathered legs and pea combs. Knowing what I know about the size of Partridge Rocks these days, I'd say a Brahma rooster of Bash's size would be quite the imposition on the average Rock hen. Now, if they were like Big Ida, it would work, but the chances of that are zero. Geez.

Some photos of MaryJo today. Oh, note that the chickens are "my" birds. Yeah, right. Last pic of her says otherwise. Her head is unfortunately, more the shape of Zara's. Definitely a Stukel bird, wouldn't you say? Wynette has a more narrow head than Druscilla, the only two choices for her mother, but Ida, the biggest head of all the hens, was Zara's mother, unless I was wrong about that.

And pretty Alice Blue. Maretta in the background. Alice is 7 1/2, Maretta is 6 1/2.

I'm trying my hand at making mini-chocolate souffles. Never made a souffle in my life and found a recipe using chocolate chips. Doing it first with the semi-sweet, and if that doesn't work out well, will try with the dark chocolate chips, which I feel may work out better. Saw it on Master Chef and just thought I'd like to try something new.

Mary Jo definitely looks like a Stukel, she's gorgeous. And Alice makes me really want a blue hen!

Thanks. Alice and her sister, Neela, trained DH to pick them up off the outside roost bar and carry them into the coop at night when they were younger. And the other hens followed suit, LOL. So, the chorus line was all lined up and waited for their turn every night. Those two were the cause of all that.

Here is Neela. She is very arthritic and has one nare completely closed off with some kind of cyst-like growth. She also has a set of old lady spurs as you can see. She is darker blue than Alice.

This tells why I chose Alice for her name and it has to do with her crystal/ice blue color:

My souffles worked okay. I think they are light because the recipe was semi-sweet and not dark chocolate. They actually tasted very good, a fairly light chocolate dessert, though I'm not sure what a truly good chocolate souffle is supposed to taste like, not having ever had one.
