The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

Oh, Lisa! When I checked one of my weather apps on my Kindle, your last night's low and today's high predictions were almost identical to ours! That tells you how crazy cold this winter has been for us, though it's probably almost a heatwave for you, after so many negative number highs and lows the last couple of weeks.

I made up a bunch of grits-oatmeal-eggs-flax seed-coconut oil-olive oil-poultry probiotic-yogurt-ginger-cinnamon-polyvisol-baby cereal (apple-banana puree) and took a big bowl out to the barn with little plastic trays and a spoon and scooped every group out some warm breakfast. Amazing how I can cook warm food for my chickens then have a protein bar for my own breakfast when it's 11* with crunchy snow outside. Yeah, I know, don't yell at me.

ETA: Cheryl, are you chilly down there? I saw snow hitting Panama City! Crazy winter. Use that wrap, lady!

Oh, I've heard the chatter in the hen house. "She's turned out to be such a nice human." "She's smart too." "It took time, but we trained her well." "She's so smart, we were even able to teach her how do to a healthy, gourmet, chicken catering service for us." :D

LOL, I bet that's not all they say! Tom says that Neela and Alice trained him to pick them up off the outside roost and carry them in at bedtime. And they did. And the others followed suit. Even Cora sometimes will get on the roost and wait for someone to come get her rather than run in with everyone else. They do train us well!

Oh, B.J. is on a nest to lay, FINALLY! Maybe the rest of the Brahmas will follow her lead and I'll be back in the Brahma eggs up to my eyeballs again. Couldn't she have done this 12 days ago when I gave Maretta eggs??

I was raking the shavings/hay mixture in the Brahma pen and it seemed damp, it was so heavy. I could almost not even push it across the floor due to the weight, so I picked up a handful to check the moisture and it was bone dry, not wet at all. With the hay mixed in and the "Brahmelephants" packing it down, I guess it just fooled me.

Wouldn't this be great painted on the side of a barn as a "barn quilt"? Still working on it, but I can see this on my barn or on a big panel attached to my barn, anyway, being corrugated steel.

I am finding these temperatures nice, and above freezing feels warm. It does all matter what you are acclimated to. Hopefully you warm up soon. I just want to stay above zero, but I'm sure I'm just wishful thinking.

We will have a quick warm up again for the weekend. I actually don't like that it gets above freezing because all the poop thaws, and than we need to do some cleaning to remove some of that moisture.

Yes, an upside to freezing your own buns off going to the barn, frozen poop is not wet!

I would love that pattern painted on my barn ends. When can you come do it???

Oh, now, fancy painting is not my purview, so sorry, no can do! What you should do is show your hubby that quilt block and tell him that since he has a wooden wall on that barn now, you'd like this motif painted on it. I want to see his face when you say that, LOL.
