The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

A positive test for brucellosis got your whole herd destroyed and burned, and buried on your farm.

Yup, that's what happens if you have ILT in your chicken flock, too. But, they don't bury them, they leave a pile of bodies for you to dispose of when they gas them.

Wisconsin is a place I probably couldn't live because of the extreme animal registration requirement (well, and the frigid cold and snow!). It's partly about the money, surely. What isn't these days, right? But, nice folks live in Wisconsin. I know that accent. A secretary in our real estate office was from Wisconsin. She was a hoot, so crotchety! And the YouTube channel, The Big Family Homestead, they recently moved from Ohio to Wisconsin when a farm came available to them.

Finally, after almost 16 years, we are getting fiber optic cable. The phone company in this area has a monopoly and are very nasty to customers. We said the minute we can leave them, they're gone. When we got here, there was only dial-up. Then, the sucky, super slow DSL. It is expensive for what you get and they say the volume of customers makes it slower. My husband called to ask why it was so darn slow today (it was barely 2MB. We pay for 5MB, still awful, but it costs $29/mo and no other internet choices...until NOW). They said the volume of customers was slowing it down, as if that should be our burden to bear. He said, not my problem, I'm paying for 5 MB, I should get that. They then said there is a system upgrade slowing it down. He asked how long that would take. Their answer? Up to a YEAR. WTH? So, they then said, well, he could cancel his acct, which is our home phone and DSL together, costs $85/mo., thinking we had no other choice. Well, think again, TDS!
We had seen ETC running lines over the past year so we called them and they said the lines to right up to our neighbor across from my driveway and we can get it! So, we got online to check out the packages. We can get 100MB internet, their cable TV with more channels than we can even watch, 85 I think, plus phone with 100 min of long distance for a discounted price of $117. I can't even imagine 100MB internet! Uploading a 4 minute video would take 2 hours or more. It will be heavenly now!

We were paying $10/mo to get the locals on Roku, which runs on internet, so that will be over now, too. And our satellite dish LNB just went bad again. No more fiddling with the satellite dishes and the roof antenna. There are days when we can't get TV from any one of those three sources. The downside is that I've had my main email for years as speckledhen@XXX and now, it will have the last part different. Ill have to send out notices that it's changed to everyone in my address book. But, I also have a GMX already in place, too.

Us rural people do get "the shaft" for modern amenities. I can barely pull local channels up, so if I want tv( and I do) I'm forced to choose between satellite companies and pay their extortion prices. I have one choice for internet, take it or leave it here.

What accent? :) I never knew we had an accent in Wisconsin, but I guess we do.

So glad you are able to get a better provider. We get 150/150 here through Frontier. Frontier bought out Verizon. They got off to a really shaky start here. Finally our governor began interceding, calling on all branches govt. that had anything to do with internet, and tv. Most people got several free months of service for their inconvenience, and the customers that had serious problems when they changed over, got lots of free, and discounted service. It took them several months, but they finally got it all sorted out, and are actually pretty good now.

NPIP here is free, and anyone that has done NPIP testing can get free necropsies. It's not required here unless you show your chickens.

I have GMX and a Gmail accts already. It's just that my main one has always been with TDS because that is the only internet provider here in my area, or has been until now. If I'm stuck on the internet, may as well have internet. TDS was always horrible, acted like they hated their customers and they had them trapped. If my husband was not here, I might disconnect entirely, but he can't live without TV and internet. I can't wait to tell TDS where to stick it!

Hey, Lisa, I'm sure you don't have an accent, nope, not at all. :p

We have TDS .

We have TDS .

My condolences. We had no choice.

Julie, your prelim says it's most likely Mareks, but other causes have not been ruled out. The symptoms do rather sound like Mareks to me, but I am never one to jump to conclusions. @1muttsfan would be better able to interpret the findings on that report than I could. There sounds like other than some worm eggs, they found nothing other than what you took her in for. At least the report makes sense, unlike others I've seen. I mean, it's insane if you read about a raging infection in the abdomen, worms and whatever, yet, the prelim is MD? I think the lab jumps to conclusions and doesn't test tissues if it's one of the places that does the free necropsies.

Oh, I almost forgot to post these! These are the chicks from Atlas and MaryJo. They are 7 weeks old tomorrow. Aren't they beautiful? I so wish I could keep them. Maretta is not letting them go yet. I had to ask Grady if it was okay to grow them out a bit more until she would release them, that I did not want to traumatize her. She is so happy being a mama again.
