The Expecting Chick Momma Thread

That's cool that you got them cheap! The cheapest place I could find over the internet that had at least a 3 chick minimum was Meyer Hatchery. I can't have more than 10 more chickens because my coop is too small. I'm thinking about expanding it this summer, so my BO's can brood again.

We also have a Rural King that just got a large shipment in. I'm half tempted to get 1 or 2 to throw in with my existing ones. I feel like chicken math is already hunting me down! Lol. Our coop is smaller too, it only has 3 nesting boxes and enough roost room for 7-10 chickens depending on size. Our run is large, and we have a huge free range area, but we have to introduce our puppy to them before they can FR

I free range my chickens as well. I have 10 nest boxes (antique ones that were made about 115 years ago) and I have enough room for 25 chickens on my roosts. I currently have 15 chickens. My coop is about 6x8. We didn't make it very big because we never expected chicken math to kick in! Lol

Congrats on the baby, Chick_In_The_Burbs! Very exciting. I had a nephew born a few weeks ago... he's so cute.

Yay for all the chickies! Gosh, I still haven't ordered yet. Waiting to build the new coop... which may take awhile. :/

My biggest concern is we have a hawk that hangs out, so I don't want them FR without the dog out there, however my dog thinks they are squeekytoys :( he hasn't hurt any, but not for a lack of trying.

Well if you build them a nice covered yard, then they at least get to be outside! That or make one of those chicken tractors that you can move around twice a day so they still get lots of bugs and grass. We were going to do that if our land lord didn't want our chickens free ranging.

I'm really thinking about composting in one corner of their run so the have plenty to get into :) can't top our large area, but saw an article the other day that gave me some ideas
